70th birthday. Husband smiling said There's another present in the kitchen. I walked in and there stood my son and partner whom I haven't seen for 3 years and my daughter whom I hadn't seen 18 months. Everything suddenly seemed unreal and I cried for a few minutes. Husband had to get me a drink. I was almost trembling. It was such a shock. I feel so stupid now for behaving like that. Why did I not just snile and say What a wonderful surprise!

It certainly was a wonderful surprise but also a huge shock!! I'm sure you recovered quite quickly and they would all understand. I hope the rest of the day went well and you had a lovely time with your family.

Congratulations on your big birthday nadaturbe thankswine

What a wonderful surprise to see your family like that, no wonder you were overcome with it all. Many of us would react in the same way, its been such a difficult time and now hopefully it is almost back to normal. I'm sure your family understood how you felt. E joy your day.

I think your reaction was perfectly natural. Emotions are allowed. I hope the subsequent hugs helped as well as the drink flowers 🥂

Happy Birthday 💐
Probably would have been the same - human nature.

BlueSky Tue 22-Jun-21 09:40:41

To be honest I don’t like surprises even nice ones because they can be such a shock. So your reaction was more than justified but I’m sure you enjoyed it afterwards! flowers

Thorntrees Tue 22-Jun-21 09:57:30

What a lovely surprise, your reaction was perfectly normal. On my 70th birthday, two years ago we had arranged a family lunch at a local pub- DH,DD1,SIL plus 2 DGC. When we arrived there was my other DD who lives in Canada who we hadn’t seen for two years,I cried too. Hope you had a lovely day with your precious family.

Callistemon Tue 22-Jun-21 10:06:25

Oh dear, I have tears in my eyes too, haven't seen some of my family for nearly two years either.
Your DH deserves a big hug too.
Enjoy your time with them

Teacheranne Tue 22-Jun-21 10:06:27

I bet your visitors loved your tears, it showed how much you have missed seeing them! What a lovely birthday surprise.

henetha Tue 22-Jun-21 10:19:42

What an amazing surprise for you. I can understand your reaction though. I too have a tendency to burst into tears at things like that. I bet they were quite amused (in a nice way) at your obvious delight.

DiscoDancer1975 Tue 22-Jun-21 10:33:39
