Do you dislike people whose values or views don't align with yours?

Or do you dislike people purely because of how they speak to you, differences of opinion aside?

Answering my own question:

I tend to look at people more for what we do have in common and think, oh well we agree on this topic and they had interesting contributions or they gave some lovely comforting advice on that topic so generally won't be rude first and I do work hard not to be rude at all lol.

No not at all. I try to gather n some rapport with all that I meet but you dont gel with everyone.

Some of my favourite people who have shown me pretty much unending kindness, are completely different to me politically

rafichagran Sun 17-Oct-21 22:37:39

No not at all, unless it it is sexist or racist.

I tend to like people who I share some common ground with. Even if just one particular interest. I don't mind if people disagree with me, as long as they respect my views the same way I respect theirs. Then again, that could be topic dependent. Some issues might make me not want to associate with a person and some views don't deserve respect, but they would be few and serious.

I love a good debate. I like to get on my soap box and air my views but always respect others opinions. I'd never fall out with someone because they didn't agree with me.
I've only got like this as I've got older. Years ago I wouldn't say boo to a goose.

I don’t dislike some people because of their views but I do dislike some because of they way they express those views.

I don't think I've met someone sexist or racist that has been so without making it personal if I disagree with them honestly

That's so good to hear, Galaxy

I too am friendly with people who have different political views. Some family members as well! And we all get on famously.

So no, we don't have to agree on everything. That would be rather dull and insular.

It's more the chemistry between you that decides whether you like that person and get on with them. Obviously it helps if you agree on some things at least.

Gosh I don’t know a single person whose every belief would align with mine, but I think I can find some common ground with most people. I like lots of people who don’t share my faith, politics, or world-view and would find it odd if someone didn’t like me simply because they didn’t agree with some of my views.

Even with friends and family you don't always agree with what they say we are all individuals.
What has someone having a different opinion/values to you have to do with disliking that person?

GagaJo Mon 18-Oct-21 00:27:34

Depends. Some things are fine to disagree on. Differences in way of life, religion (I don't have one but respect anyone else's choice in this area), culture. All fine. Great in fact. I'm always happy to learn new things.

Political views, I'm also OK with difference to a certain extent. But right-wing beliefs, no. I'm not tolerant of them. They're not about equality, they're about selfishness so not tolerable.

Some things are non negotiable though. Bigotry of any kind. Racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia. I don't want to be friends with anyone who holds those beliefs. As work colleagues, I can be polite. But not in my personal life.

I'm friends with tons of people with whom I disagree on some aspect. I'd hate to be in an echo chamber of people who agreed with my every thought, how boring. As long as someone is honest and respectful of other's opinions then I will treat them the same. I cannot abide devious people who twist and turn facts and outright lie to make their point.

Doodledog Mon 18-Oct-21 00:44:49

I agree with Rosie.

I also dislike passive aggression and thinly veiled digs.

Chewbacca Mon 18-Oct-21 00:59:58

I second that Doodledog.

Ali08 Mon 18-Oct-21 01:49:29

If I disliked everyone who had different views and opinions to me I'd probably have no friends, just clones!!

Beswitched Mon 18-Oct-21 08:36:23

I can only think of one or two friends who would have the same view on most things as I would.

I have no problem with someone disagreeing with me as long as they're not rude or arrogant or sneery in the process.

I third it

One person’s rudeness is another person’s honest view.

I do not have a problem with people.....I don't like anyone🙊🙊😂😂😂😂

VioletSky Mon 18-Oct-21 09:05:00

Interesting replies so far

Thank you

Blondiescot Mon 18-Oct-21 09:10:01

I'm with GagaJo on this. I can get along quite happily with people who have differing views on many subjects - but there are some where I draw the line, and that includes bigotry of any kind. I'm also always very sceptical of people who say they don't like animals. I know I'll get stick for saying that, but to me, it says a lot about them as a person.

sodapop Mon 18-Oct-21 09:17:27

I agree with Beswitched very few of my friends have views which are all the same as mine. We argue about some things but respect each other's point of view.
It would be so boring if we agreed on everything.

Smileless2012 Mon 18-Oct-21 09:21:46

I fourth it Rosie, Chewbacca and Iam.
