This seems to be the latest verbal tic, particularly with politicians (of all stripes).

The all seem to be saying 'Look', or 'Now look', before they impart some wisdom or other.

It feels like being spoken to by the Headmistress. I wish they'd stop it.

Irritating, but perhaps more honest than the ubiquitous 'Let's be clear...'

Doodledog Wed 28-Sep-22 20:43:36

Fair point grin.

FannyCornforth Thu 29-Sep-22 02:20:04

How about, ‘now look, the minister has been very clear…’
Aargh ?‍♀️

Witzend Thu 29-Sep-22 08:16:31

‘Let me be absolutely clear…’

Spinnaker Thu 29-Sep-22 08:22:53

'The fact of the matter is...' or, 'Let's be honest'
Both these are usually as far from factual or truthful as you can get grin

They should try "Fingers on lips, eyes on me!" Works every time.

I watch a few Australian programmes on TV, and I have noticed that they often start a sentence with 'look'. At first I thought it sounded rude or aggressive, but have got used to it.

Doodledog Thu 29-Sep-22 10:35:55

The important question is . . . . . .

is it more or less irritating than people starting every sentence with 'so'?

Germanshepherdsmum Thu 29-Sep-22 10:38:05

I can’t bear ‘So …’. Nor ‘If I’m being/to be honest’.

Doodledog Thu 29-Sep-22 10:40:52

So look, if I'm being honest, I have to say that at the end of the day he turned around and said, like, 'Yeah'. Know what I mean?

Germanshepherdsmum Thu 29-Sep-22 10:45:45

Yeah. Innit.

lixy Fri 30-Sep-22 13:37:41

I'm not gonna lie, so if I'm being honest 'so' irritates me more than 'look' on an everyday basis.

You do see the irony here, no?

lixy Fri 30-Sep-22 20:50:43

So, FannyCornforth. let's be clear that in an ongoing ironic situation some things are said/written on purpose actually.
I have cast my vote in Doodledog's 'so' vs 'look' election. How are the polls doing?

NanKate Fri 30-Sep-22 21:00:26

What irritates me is when some is about to be interviewed they say to the Interviewer (who they have never spoken to before) ‘How are you?’. There is an epidemic of strangers asking each other this question and the answer is always in the affirmative. ?

NanKate Fri 30-Sep-22 21:01:34

Another irritation ‘Let’s unpack the question’. ?

lemsip Sat 01-Oct-22 13:04:18

yes, no. and no yes.

JaneJudge Sat 01-Oct-22 13:06:13

I have an annoying habit of saying, Oh, ok...in response to anything I even annoy myself and I can't stop doing it

50% in favour, and half against wink

Germanshepherdsmum Sat 01-Oct-22 18:06:23

So ‘what’s the takeaway from that’? Another expression that grates. To me a takeaway is an edible treat.

Germanshepherdsmum Sat 01-Oct-22 18:06:47

Sorry, that’s a ‘takeout’ now.

Doodledog Sat 01-Oct-22 18:21:14

I'm not sure about the takeout, but the optics aren't good grin.

So, after unpacking the takeout, it’s very clear that the Right Honourable Doodledog has very clearly delivered an up-tick for the optics.
Now look, I’m sure that you will agree that this clearly needs no further clarification hmm

FannyCornforth Sun 02-Oct-22 08:23:57

Sorry, I should have added something about ‘doing the right thing’ and ‘hard working families’
