Central heating

Following on from another thread about keeping warm while having morning tea in bed, I read an article just a few days ago about when the best time to switch on the CH is.
It stated the best day was October 29th.
This was based on when temperatures are expected to start falling and night getting longer.
Do you wait until then?
I am sure in spite of the “cost of living crisis” , frequently quoted in my house, mine will be on, certainly in the morning before that.

Except for short warm spells in late May and week or so in August, ours comes on for an hour every morning and evening. Later in the year I'll adjust it to stay on longer if the temperatures are lower than at the moment – currently about 10º.

We've lived here 17 years and this has been the same every year. All my relations who live in warmer (and less damp) places think it's hilarious that I call 17º outside 'hot' 😂

PS I bet that article is SE England-based.

I suppose it depends where you live. This area is usually frost free thanks to the Gulf Stream. Last winter my friend who lives about 30 miles inland was snowed in several days but nothing here. The heating goes on for one hour in the morning in cold weather once winter arrives. We turn it on as needed during the day.

Ours has come on (thermostat in each room).

MerylStreep Fri 22-Sep-23 10:04:02

Our heating is never turned off. It is set at 21 so if it dropped below that in July it would come on. I don’t do cold 😟

Grannynannywanny Fri 22-Sep-23 10:10:56

I’ve been trying to hold off to keep the bills down but feel the temperature has really dropped this week. I’ve had to layer up my clothing and have a body warmer on around the house today.

I’m looking forward to my teenage grandchildren spending the weekend with me and as it’s currently 14c indoors I’m going to put the heating on before they arrive to take the chill off the house. I don’t want them to say in years to come “remember when we used to stay at Gran’s and her house was cold and miserable” 😆

Hetty58 Fri 22-Sep-23 10:11:26

Mine is off for a long time yet - but then, I'm in London, with it's own microclimate.

Germanshepherdsmum Fri 22-Sep-23 10:11:47

Same here Meryl.

Hetty58 Fri 22-Sep-23 10:14:44

I'm more into door curtains, bubble-wrapped windows, wearing layers, electric blankets (and throws) - along with plenty of walks and hot drinks. Central heating is a last resort.

Witzend Fri 22-Sep-23 10:17:46

If I really feel chilly, despite adequate clothing, the heating goes on. But we’re not there yet.

Dh doesn’t feel the cold as much as I do but I notice that he’s more likely to admit to feeling chilly nowadays. When younger he never did.

This morning for the first time I’m regretfully out of my summer trousers. I have on my new M&S ‘cosy’ jeggings, a thin camisole, a long thinnish polo neck jumper, and a padded gilet. And warm socks!

I must dig out my sheepskin ‘house boots’ and put them in the washing machine. Several years old now but invaluable when it’s really cold.

henetha Fri 22-Sep-23 10:25:00

It's darned chilly here in the mornings now, unseasonably so,
Absolutely don't want to put the CH on yet. Perish the thought!
So I've bought a little fan heater thing from Argos and am collecting it later today. It will come in handy.
I'm in my warm fleecy house trousers this morning and a big warm cardigan. But the sun is shining.

kittylester Fri 22-Sep-23 10:39:13

I don't do cold either.

Ours is coming on (of it's own volition) most mornings now. We boost it in the evening if needed.

Foxygloves Fri 22-Sep-23 10:55:40

I’m hanging on as long as possible 🥶🥶🥶🥶🥶
Having unpacked and rediscovered my winter woollies however I find I have enough to wear them 2 at a time and I also have some lovely cashmere jackets/wraps/ponchos which I plan to wear indoors if necessary - as I have nowhere smart to wear them to anyway!

Whitewavemark2 Fri 22-Sep-23 10:56:56

I looked at the house temperature yesterday - 22c so the heating won’t be on yet. It was chilly out this morning though - but the house stays warm as it is heated by the conservatory downstairs.

annsixty Fri 22-Sep-23 11:10:15

Like Whitewave my conservatory is warm at this time of the year in the morning, being east facing.
I am in here now and the temperature is 20.5.
It will be like this until lunchtime.
Outside it is raining and chilly.
Heating will come on in the morning after next week if temperatures stay the same.

BlueBelle Fri 22-Sep-23 11:22:09

I don’t have any central heating so you make do and mend and find other ways of keeping warm
I rarely get colds though

rosie1959 Fri 22-Sep-23 13:05:22

Our house temperature is still around 22c never ever have we had our heating on this early in the year usually late October at the earliest

growstuff Fri 22-Sep-23 13:09:41

No idea what my house temperature is, but it doesn't feel chilly yet.

Hetty58 Fri 22-Sep-23 13:23:25

Mine's 21 C - and I did have the heated floor in the shower room on for a couple of hours, but it's only 300W and the solar panels would have powered it. I'm just too mean to have any heating on until it's really cold, maybe November.

sodapop Fri 22-Sep-23 13:36:30

No central heating here either. My husband & I prefer cooler rooms and have more of a problem with heat than cold. We tend to wear fleeces etc if it gets really cold.
Sometimes we forget when we have guests and only put the fire on when their teeth start chattering.🥶

crazyH Fri 22-Sep-23 14:13:11

I don’t do cold either , CH boiler is on all the time mainly for the hot water . I adjust the thermostat in the living room according to the temperature outside .

Fleurpepper Fri 22-Sep-23 14:23:22

The pump for our CH has been switched off since beg. of may. But a very cold spell is predicted, and we have a dog sitter coming to look after dog and cat- so we have put it back on in case she is cold, and provided an oil filled electric heater for the lounge if she needs it in the evenings. Otherwise we would have waited will end of October normally. Our hot water is provided by solar panels year round- with the CH only taking over if there is a long spell of cloudy weather.

Jaxjacky Fri 22-Sep-23 15:01:50

Put ours back on timer yesterday having been off for months, it came on at 6:30 this morning. South of England.

karmalady Fri 22-Sep-23 15:15:21

It depends on how much I have physically done, moving warms me up and so does any sun. No heating on yet and I cannot forsee that happening for some weeks. These new builds are built to cope with cold, very highly insulated. East/west and sun all day, if there is any

I have programmed the oldie safe temperatures into all the thermostats, five of them and I think I will turn the actual thermostats on later today. They will catch any low temperature blip that I don`t physically notice
