Just back from local shops. The streets were full of Grans with children. I wondered what was going on but remembered Scottish schools are closed as staff on strike. Grans obviously filling in for working parents. Well done all thanks

No Grandads?

Grandmabatty Tue 26-Sep-23 11:26:27

Grandson is still at nursery and the attached school was open. I'm not sure all Scottish schools are out.

Aveline Tue 26-Sep-23 11:40:16

I was just wishing the DGSs were off school too. Oh well. Obviously schools near us were shut. It was good to see all those purposeful ladies doing their bit. I'm sure Grandads would be involved but I didn't see any on my travels.

No schools on strike here .Its only one union that refused the offer ...strangely enough the head of the union is also a member of a political unionist organisation who doesn't want SNP to succeed so has "advised" union members to refuse the offer already accepted by the other 2 teaching unions .
We've had no strikes by NHS or teachers and only Network Rail strikes that affect us.Of course network rail is owned and run by WM who refused to negotiate unlike the Scottish government !

Of course! The SNP government are not to blame for their frankly dismal record. It's all Westminster's fault 😂😂😂.

Mid and East Lothian were not closed fortunately or we would have to split up for child care

Gran and papa on duty here in East Ren. We had a lovely day, but DGD had work to do at home.
DIL's nieces in Renfrewshire had to log onto the system from home at 9am.
I remember ancillary staff on strike, when I was still teaching, but schools didn't close.

Does that include Scottish universities?
Isn't Higher Education devolved?

Lecturers will be striking soon.

As if school pupils and students haven't had enough disruption over the past few years.

It is support staff, members of unison, who are striking, not teaching staff.

Grammaretto Wed 27-Sep-23 05:25:21

I'm heading up to Perthshire to help out and really looking forward to spending time with those bairns.
DD can work from home but can't when she has to watch those 2.

The support staff are on strike here so I am on duty too.I am taking my S1 granddaughter to the Mary Quant exhibition in Glasgow tomorrow. We grandparents are the best.

Qwerty Thu 28-Sep-23 12:27:45

Yes we are! We're in England but it's our first day without two grandchildren this week as they've been off with minor illnesses. However we've got two grandchildren from our other daughter after school today. It's a good job we enjoy their company.

Just heard on the news that a school in Rutland has 17 teachers who have tested positive for Covid. I guess that means some classes will have to stay at home, so more Grandparents will be doing childcare!

Quaver22 Thu 28-Sep-23 14:12:24

I am so envious of grans who look after their grandchildren. My only grandchildren are in New Zealand and I haven’t seen them for 5 years!

Sarahr Thu 28-Sep-23 21:24:47

What I would give to spend some time, even a minute with my grandchildren......

Mojack26 Thu 28-Sep-23 23:48:05

Not all Scottish schools closed because of ancillary staff on strike. All West Lothian Schools are operating as normal

Aveline Fri 29-Sep-23 06:14:55

Grans can stand down. Strikes over for this week.
17 teachers with Covid Cabbie21. Gosh.

Marydoll Fri 29-Sep-23 07:19:14

I had a pile of schoolwork to help with, it took two minutes to slip back into teacher mode, including that teacher voice!
However, I did thoroughly enjoy it, it was lovely to have unexpected time with DGD.!!

Grammaretto Fri 29-Sep-23 18:23:35

Half term (tattie picking) in Scotland coming up so more DGP on the move.

I met a granddad at the bus stop who told me he had got stuck in a flume at the swimming pool much to the embarrassment of his DGC.

Nothing so bad for me. We went for a walk in the woods, did a little schoolwork and I took them out to lunch.
