On a recent visit to a churchyard I noticed the following on a headstone “He tried to be kind”
Have to say it made me smile.😊

Oh dear, damning with faint praise!

TerriBull Fri 02-Feb-24 17:54:44

I quite liked, this "I told you I was ill" someone famous but I can't remember who.

Smileless2012 Fri 02-Feb-24 17:56:12

That was Spike Milligan TerriBull; good isn't it grin.

We have some very entertaining inscriptions on the older memorials in our churchyard, mainly about how fleeting life is!

What I think is a shame, is that more recent ones don't mention the work the people did for the church. One lady was churchwarden for many years but there's no mention of that on her headstone, likewise one of the men was organist for a long time, but his memorial doesn't tell you that.

I'm both churchwarden and organist. Will there be room on my memorial for all that?

Depends how much those you leave behind are prepared to pay - stone masons charge by the letter.

It that case it will be ‘Goodbye’

I'm pretty sure this comes from a gravestone somewhere in one of the Southern States of the USA. I think I can find it. Back in a sec.

ETA - Here's the whole poem:

Here lies a poor woman who always was tired
For she lived in a place where help wasn't hired
Her last words on earth were, "Dear friends I am going
Where washing ain't done nor sweeping nor sewing
And everything there is exact to my wishes
For there they don't eat and there's no washing of dishes
Don't mourn for me now, don't mourn for me never
For I'm going to do nothing for ever and ever."

timetogo2016 Fri 02-Feb-24 18:49:23

Bye bye tax man.

Labradora Fri 02-Feb-24 18:58:56

"She tried to keep her head above the water.... glug..... glug"
OR
"Who ? Me? What, Right Now ?"
OR
"Was that it ....?"
Like the Spike Milligan one.....
GSM is right...... headstones are expensive....

BlueBelle Fri 02-Feb-24 19:39:13

I m not having a headstone

sodapop Fri 02-Feb-24 19:39:37

I saw the headstone of a young woman who died recently aged 22, her email address was on the headstone. Made me smile a little.

Luckygirl3 Fri 02-Feb-24 19:42:36

Mine is already on the stone on my late OH's grave:

"I rest in the grace of the world and am free."

A quote from Wendell Berry's poem The Peace of Wild Things.

No headstone for me. My only memorial will be in the memories of those who survive me and remember me, especially my grandchildren.

GrannySomerset Fri 02-Feb-24 19:46:52

I quite fancy “It’s where you left it”.

Greenfinch Fri 02-Feb-24 19:49:16

😄😄😄 GrannySomerset. I like that too.

Smileless2012

That was Spike Milligan TerriBull; good isn't it grin.

But it was written in Irish Gaelic so not everyone realises what it says.

Floradora9 Fri 02-Feb-24 21:35:28

Like many others I will have no gravestone but if I did it would say " at least she tried "

flappergirl Fri 02-Feb-24 21:45:55

I think I'll have "this time next year I'll be a millionaire"
