No control over incoming passengers at airports

I cannot understand the U.K. government stance on incoming flights. What is the use of the U.K. population following the rules and isolating if anybody is allowed to arrive at the airports unchecked? There are flights from Italy and the USA where the virus is rife. What’s it all about? Counterproductive in my opinion.

Its a disgrace, an absolute disgrace. I have said time and time again it should have been done a month or more ago. Boris couldn't organised a pix up in a brewery.

I too have found this very puzzling - people are coming in by plane and also via the channel tunnel. There does not seem to be any restraint or checking; which, as you say, makes no sense at all when we are all isolating ourselves from friends and family.

Needs someone to give Boris and COBRA a nudge?

Hey boys (mainly) have you thought about this? Hmmmm....

I contacted my (Tory )MP about this some weeks ago and his response was that there were leaflets and posters to advise incoming passengers and there was no need to do anything more. Absolutely shocking.

My husband flew into LHR two weeks ago. No signs regarding the virus, no hand gel, indeed no checks at all. We have isolated so far for 13 days, tomorrow we should be able to go to a shop. He flew from the Phillipines, and only had 72 hours to leave, he was lucky to get a flight! I couldn’t believe there was no warnings! I called our GP who advised 14 days, which we have adhered too.

Quarantining people at airports should have been a priority all along. We had all that publicity about the original arrivals from Wuhan going into quarantine but that didn't last long. The arrivals on flights from Italy were allowed through with no checks. Goodness knows how many infected arrived then. And since.

The virus is circulating so widely now that social distancing and self isolating to slow the spread is the only practical way of handling the numbers involved. There is no way of isolating the thousands coming back to the UK, it worked with a few hundred.

We should have closed our borders a month ago. No one in - no one out.
There’s absolutely no control whatsoever.

It's all well and good closing borders but how would we get our foodstuffs from abroad ?

EllanVannin Wed 01-Apr-20 14:48:58

Containers/lorries are still entering by sea. We as a country aren't self-sufficient enough not to rely on other countries.

EllanVannin Wed 01-Apr-20 14:54:42

There will be delays in foodstuffs soon because ferries that cross channels/seas have slashed many of the staff as it's not a viable just carrying containers with no foot passengers or cars.

That'll be the next problem on the horizon, a skeleton staff operating the ferries.

It is shocking - unbelievable that we’re still allowing plane loads to land with no testing or monitoring in place. The lack of consistency and common sense is staggering.

Any problem is not ferry capacity there are very few cars taking up ferry capacity, if the ferries have crew problems Navy crews will have to take over. Any supply restrictions at present is due to pickers and drivers being restricted in exporting countries.

I read a few ago that Preti Patel said she thought the airfreights bringing people should be stopped but nothing happened. I really think this government hasn't got a grip at all.

Here in Australia, our borders have been closed for a few weeks. They have even closed all the state borders. People arriving here are citizens or residents returning from abroad. They are being met at the airport etc, provided with masks and then escorted onto buses and then taken to hotels where they are required to self-isolate for at least 14 days.

Makes no sense whatsoever. Borders should of been closed weeks ago. Hardly right to expect us to have all these restrictions only for the government to wave these people through. Not even a thermometer in sight.

I have just emailed my.mp to request again that those coming into the country from covid affected cruise ships and those being repatriated be tested on arrival.
If we all did that maybe they would take notice ,
