Long Covid or just getting on a bit?

Because of my job I had a Covid test back in April and it was positive, I was asymptomatic and felt quite lucky to be that way as several of my colleagues were very very ill with it. I now find that I have very bad aching legs in the morning and sometimes it’s the whole body and fingers and toes get pins and needles, I am loath to go to Dr Google but have spoken to my doctor and there is no way of proving what it is at this time. I am covid tested every week with two tests one being the lateral flow I’ve been negative ever since....

It does take its toll but I'd say that a lot has to do with your general health to start with, diet/ lifestyle etc.

Well I am quite fit and active, don’t drive so consequently do a lot of walking and don’t drink or smoke and l am 68 next month,5 foot five and my weight is at the moment 10 stone 10.....?

Can you be asymptomatic and then have long covid?
So no symptoms when you are positive, but symptoms when you aren't?

Who knows FC? I think there is so much unknown about this virus and it is quite scary as we all know... Even my doctor doesn’t seem to know he says it possibly is,he’s going to do some blood tests.

Long Covid doesn’t mean you need to continue to test positive to have it, it’s a post-viral syndrome, and as far as I’ve read, you don’t need to have been very poorly with Covid itself to suffer the post-viral effects. Hopefully this will explain the potential signs.

I know a little bit about it because I know somebody who has it, his symptoms are that he’s breathless on any exercise, and feels exhausted. He had Covid in March, and still isn’t fit enough to return to work.

Hope you get some answers from your tests Shinamae.

Shinamae Without knowing your medical history, it's impossible for any of us on here to say. It could, for example, be a symptom of Vitamin B12 deficiency, which is sometimes missed because serum blood tests don't show whether it's being absorbed, which can be a problem if you're taking certain medications.

Hopefully my doctor will do full tests to find out if I am vitamin Deficient at all, I do take magnesium at night and vitamin D in the morning and have done way before Covid..The only medication I take is a daily aspirin apart from that nothing at the moment.....

My DD aged 36 had Covid last March, although no tests then, there was no doubt what it was.
She now has long Covid which is a moving feast of symptoms.
Inflammation of the sternum, chronic fatigue, nose bleeds, and at the moment peripheral neuropathy which is the exact symptom you are describing.
GPs are new to this so feeling their way a bit. Don't be afraid to go to see them, and persist.
There are many NHS professionals with long Covid so they are influencing research, and forming help groups. Don't be afraid to Google long Covid. Hope this helps.

Thank you all so much for your input and advice ???

Shinamae Wed 13-Jan-21 17:53:55

I have just ordered some B12 supplements ?

My DH is still very poorly after being hospitalised with pneumonia and suspected Covid. I don't know whether he has so called long covid or not, and neither do the HCP s.
He gets out of breath getting dressed.
His ultimate goal is to be able to take the dog for a walk.
It's a long way off.
So, yes, I understand your concerns.

Unfortunately I think there is so much more we will eventually find out about this Covid and I don’t think a lot of it will be good.... but if the vaccine works and we have to have it once a year like the flu jab I’m all for that....

I feel for you I had a post viral illness/ ME in the late 1980s and that took about 3 years to really get over. I was lucky in a way at the time as I was sent to see a hospital specialist who had come from the Royal Marsden to our west country hospital as part of some post viral research he was doing and he diagnosed what was wrong with me when I thought I might be going mad. In the end I found the most helpful thing was acupuncture as I was unable to hibernate!!!
Good luck

ok, so i cannot prove I had covid in late Dec 2019 into January 2020, but I can tell you that long covid as they put it is very real and manifests in different ways, mine was shortness of breath, my oxygen was fine and raised pulse over 100 for near 8 months , now these have gone away or back to normal ,but for a man there is also loss of libido, ongoing. what with all the other health problems not good. I would say that in time the after effects will go away, but for some will stay with them

Thank you Casdon for the link

Post viral symptoms can vary so much. Take a look at a Facebook blog called Into The New Normal by a mum with Long Covid symptoms and how she deals. I have sent her some tips because my DH had such symptoms with Chronic Lyme Disease. Pacing yourself is the most vital tip.

Hi Shinamae could be long Covid or it does sound like it could be a b12 deficiency but you should get your blood test results back before supplementing. Also ask them to check your thyroid levels aswell. I get achy knees and legs especially in the cold weather and my thyroid was low. I'm now on thyroxine and I do feel better. Not saying yours is low but its a good idea to get it checked. Take care and hope you feel more energetic soon ?

So sorry to hear, how your feeling. My son who is eary 40's and very physically fit, had covid over Christmas, he was very poorly, four weeks later he is so exhausted he can hardly walk, all he does is sleep, other very wierd symptoms including very cold feet. I read up about long term effects and the fatigue muscle ache, joint pains, brain fog, all seem to be the long term symptoms. It's not good. Hope you start to have less soon.

I had coronavirus last March after going to Twickenham rugby (not hospitalised at the time (would be now though!) very ill with it) ? ... yesterday I had a chest X-ray to see if there is lasting damage left over from it, never had these breathing problems before and energy levels are so low still! Long Covid ~ should be called Never-Ending Covid ...

Shinamae - i had Covid at the beginning of April and have had aching joints since - to the point i was struggling to get upstairs. My husband some days was shoving me up and i was at the point of looking for a bungalow. The pain was driving me mad. I couldn't sleep it was waking me up after being laid for a couple of hours.
Before xmas the nurse put me on the pill for inflammation it started easing after a couple of weeks.
Now i just get nerve shooting pains which are debilitating but not a constant like the joint pains.
I couldn't kneel or walk quick everything kept giving in. I couldn't get off the chair without pain and cracking.
This all started about 4 weeks from contracting covid. I was 49 a couple of weeks ago. I would definitely say it's long covid.x

A friend had it for three weeks in October. He’s working now but gets a little breathless but not too bad. My 100 year old mother been in hospital since November due to be discharged week last Monday tested n found Covid positive. No symptoms at all n now all being well discharged Monday. Sadly my 99 year old DF passed with Covid in April. Hope you feel better soon

Whatdayisit Thu 14-Jan-21 10:17:48

Ps i was taking vitamins none helping but berroccas are really working now giving me much more energy.

Whatdayisit Thu 14-Jan-21 10:31:49

I forgot about the brain fog i think that is lifting to normal levels of brain fog. And the breathlessness- still not much breath for kissing husband. And struggle walking downhill legs give in.
All post covid.

Whatdayisit
Hello. Your symptoms sound exactly like mine, but mine are due to osteoarthritis and spinal stenosis, which has worsened very quickly this year. I'm pretty certain that my issues aren't Covid related. (I'm the same age as you too)
Have you had xrays?
Sorry that you are in so much pain and discomfort.
