Hi, I am familiar with OH, sil, bil and mil - but totally confused with the abbreviations used here on Gransnet. Can anyone give the the official list, please?

Good morning, Juragran. Click on 'Acronyms' in the blue bar at the top of the page. I don't use them myself but it is helpful to be able to understand them.

Thanks Greatnan, very helpful.

Adding my thanks to Greatnan. Just found this site after hearing some very sensible comments about the Budget from a Gransnet representative but those abbreviations threw me. Thanks.

they are so annoying!

They won't be annoying when you've learned what they mean, gbun! wink

Some of the acronyms are annoying to the point of nauseating the darling daughter/son/husband whatever imported from Mumsnet just sounds twee at best and smug at worst. It kind of smacks of "aren't I clever because I've produced children"

I thought DH (or whatever) often stood for darling bloody husband (or whatever) without the bloody wink.

Depending on your mood, it could be Damn...

Prefer OG (old git) instead of DH grin

bagitha Mon 16-Apr-12 13:38:53

And OG can mean old geezer for when he isn't being *

glassortwo Mon 16-Apr-12 13:46:49

grin maybe he does not deserve the old, as he is younger than me wink

granjura Mon 16-Apr-12 22:37:39

Not here, but I couldn't believe it when I first saw OMG - as it was my 'maiden' (don't you hate that word!) initials.

grin granjura!

I find abbreviating words very lazy and a younger generations habit or perhaps its that they can't spell

The abbreviations commonly used on GN, misunderstood, are just to remove the need to type every relation's title in full.
