Cameron wants retired pensioners to retrain as teachers.

Anyone up for it?

ninathenana Sun 22-Jun-14 23:00:00

Aaaggghhh, <runs screaming from the room>

Ana Sun 22-Jun-14 23:01:38

Aren't most Gransnetters retired teachers anyway?

durhamjen Sun 22-Jun-14 23:06:38

With you,nina.
Some are, Ana, but it does not matter. We are living longer, so need to work longer. Doesn't matter that there are lots of young qualified teachers who cannot get jobs.
Article's in the Telegraph.

Ana Sun 22-Jun-14 23:08:26

What, no link? shock

durhamjen Sun 22-Jun-14 23:13:32

Thought you'd complain if I did, Ana. You usually tell me you're quite capable of finding it yourself, so do so.

Ana Sun 22-Jun-14 23:17:27

No thanks, it doesn't sound that interesting.

durhamjen Sun 22-Jun-14 23:20:14

Why, you're probably just the sort of person Cameron wants in the classroom.

boheminan Sun 22-Jun-14 23:23:24

I'm not a retired teacher (thank goodness)

Well, I was interested! Silly idea though. We like to have fun in our retirement!

Ana Sun 22-Jun-14 23:26:22

durhamjen, you're so funny! grin

durhamjen Sun 22-Jun-14 23:28:01

Boheminan, you do not have to be a retired teacher, just retired.
They are talking about it on channel 80 in a minute.

merlotgran Sun 22-Jun-14 23:29:01

Well, I'm a retired teacher. I worked until nearly 65. Absolutely knackered when I finished!

It's not April 1st is it?

annodomini Sun 22-Jun-14 23:37:24

Cameron will get a well-deserved raspberry for that bright idea!

HollyDaze Sun 22-Jun-14 23:59:20

Given that most employers have an aversion to employing older people (not even those that have passed retirement age but those who look to be anywhere near it), how does he think retired people will be given those jobs? He really does live in an alternate universe!

rockgran Mon 23-Jun-14 00:05:17

That would be my worst nightmare!

Nelliemoser Mon 23-Jun-14 00:18:13

The man is off his rocker. I cannot see why anyone who is retired as per state retirement age would want to start training a a teacher. It requires so much stamina.

Soutra Mon 23-Jun-14 09:10:08

Oh puh-lease! shock Not only are we expected to run hslf the essential services as volunteers, support our working DC as unpaid child carers, possibly be carers to our parents/partners but in our free time (!) take on a demanding new career which requires physical stamina, mental acuity and flexibility in a profession which in several areas has few vacancies. Good thinking Batman. Daft as a bunch of frogs.

merlotgran Mon 23-Jun-14 09:43:13

Who pays for the training? hmm

Elegran Mon 23-Jun-14 09:43:31

He lives in an alternative universe.

rosesarered Mon 23-Jun-14 09:44:19

Soutra I gather that's a no then? grinMy DH was a retired maths teacher, but went back to work again a few years ago.He enjoys it.Not full time though.

Soutra Mon 23-Jun-14 10:17:58

Whatever gives you the idea I am not brimming with enthusiasm roses? grin When I retired I could have gone on, ideally part time quite happily for a couple of years but the other demands on my time (DGS) plus DH's health would have made it virtually impossible to juggle successfully. And that was with years of experience to draw o n. The idea of starting afresh is bonkers plus kids don't want old fogeys like us in the classroom!! I think Cameron and others are frankly clutching at straws terrified at the growing number of retired inteligent people who might think for themselves and start making trouble when it comes to elections!

rosesarered Mon 23-Jun-14 10:22:02

You could well be right!

henetha Mon 23-Jun-14 10:27:26

Does Cameron mean retired teachers, or anyone who is retired?
Perish the thought anyway. I'd make a lousy teacher.

Atqui Mon 23-Jun-14 11:02:11

He means anyone retired.Probably will suggest a couple of weeks training. After all that's all you need to be a good teacher isn't it????
