How ridiculous! DD2 is 34 and would not take kindly to being labelled "middle aged". She is still young with all her life still ahead of her. As the youngest in private I still call her "the baby"

Yep, it makes us all old I guess. But what a horrific story, the poor au pair, what a terrible fate. Somewhere in the world this morning, a family are going to be devastated by the news that their darling has been murdered, how awful.

I remember Terry Wogan describing himself as middle aged' at nearly 70! He did add that it would mean living to 140.

Gosh DD is 37 with two young children aged 7 & 4 months. If anybody described her as "middle aged" they'd better get out of her way fast

I think the tragedy of a young woman's murder isn't appropriate for a light-hearted look at ageism - complete with manic grins and musical notes.

Times have changed.
But in the days of when three score years and ten was generally accepted to be when the majority of us would have checked out by, then 35 would have been middle aged.
I think as people are living longer then I agree 50 would be middle age.

I expect the government are reviewing their terminology in light of the recent shift in retirement age

Oh Riverwalk no disrespect was intended to the poor young woman, just a (to me at any rate) justifiable dig at the Daily Telegraph for its use of language ecause it should know better. Don't go all sniffy.

Maw I'm all for a dig at the Telegraph with their stupid use of 'middle aged' but the resulting jollity in the thread sits ill at ease with the awfulness of the young woman's death.

Most inappropriate to use this tragic article as a sounding board for your insecurities about middle age!!

Today's BBC lunchtime news says they don't know the age or gender.
So where do the paper get the fact that it's a young woman ?

Ninathenana, It's assumed to be a woman as the greater proportion of exploited domestic servants is always women. Especially favoured by employers with no care for their employees are those from cultures where women do as they're told.
