Middle aged?? What does that make us?

From today's DT

"THE badly burned body of an “au pair” has been found in the garden of a £900,000 London home and a middle-aged couple arrested on suspicion of murder
The couple, believed to be French nationals, were detained by police on Wednesday night after the remains of a person, who has not been identified, were found in a garden on Wimbledon Park Road, Wandsworth. The couple, described as a 40-year-old man and a 34-year-old woman, are believed to live at the address with their two children, who have been taken into care"

I would not have thanked anybody for calling me "middle-aged" at 34 or even 40 for that matter.
But what does that make the majority of us? hmm

B....y old.

Antique and valuable grin.

If 34 = middle age

64= near the end
74 = past the sell by date
84 = hanging by a thread
gringrin

How ridiculous! DD2 is 34 and would not take kindly to being labelled "middle aged". She is still young with all her life still ahead of her. As the youngest in private I still call her "the baby"

Probably written by someone who was barely in theit twenties!

maddyone Fri 22-Sep-17 10:26:04

Yep, it makes us all old I guess. But what a horrific story, the poor au pair, what a terrible fate. Somewhere in the world this morning, a family are going to be devastated by the news that their darling has been murdered, how awful.

sarahellenwhitney Fri 22-Sep-17 10:26:45

tonibolt Oh dear! now you have put the cat among the pigeons .
I frequently wonder where the media find the likes of these persons and of what relevance is the value of the house?.

Sheilasue Fri 22-Sep-17 10:34:47

I am 72 don't think I am passed the sell by date. It's all in the mind.
If you think young you stay young.

Teddy123 Fri 22-Sep-17 10:46:03

OAPs ..... Or the one I saw on TV as this week SKIs (spending kids inheritance)

Haven't read the paper yet ..... Tragic story ..... Just horrific ....

Love it

Ancient but happy!

Blinko Fri 22-Sep-17 11:11:38

I remember Terry Wogan describing himself as middle aged' at nearly 70! He did add that it would mean living to 140.

Legs55 Fri 22-Sep-17 11:39:19

Gosh DD is 37 with two young children aged 7 & 4 months. If anybody described her as "middle aged" they'd better get out of her way fastgrin

I'm 62, older but not ancient, my DM is 88, getting on a bit. Who writes this rubbish?I didn't think you were described as "middle aged" until you hit 50shock

Riverwalk Fri 22-Sep-17 12:23:34

I think the tragedy of a young woman's murder isn't appropriate for a light-hearted look at ageism - complete with manic grins and musical notes.

Cherrytree59 Fri 22-Sep-17 12:28:14

Times have changed.
But in the days of when three score years and ten was generally accepted to be when the majority of us would have checked out by, then 35 would have been middle aged.
I think as people are living longer then I agree 50 would be middle age.

I expect the government are reviewing their terminology in light of the recent shift in retirement agehmm

MawBroon Fri 22-Sep-17 12:32:22

Oh Riverwalk no disrespect was intended to the poor young woman, just a (to me at any rate) justifiable dig at the Daily Telegraph for its use of language ecause it should know better. Don't go all sniffy.

Riverwalk Fri 22-Sep-17 12:55:50

Maw I'm all for a dig at the Telegraph with their stupid use of 'middle aged' but the resulting jollity in the thread sits ill at ease with the awfulness of the young woman's death.

Not sniffy, just feeling a bit 'not quite right'.

W11girl Fri 22-Sep-17 14:19:20

Most inappropriate to use this tragic article as a sounding board for your insecurities about middle age!!

Lilyflower Fri 22-Sep-17 14:31:42

My daughter, who has only just turned 26, keeps bewailing the fact that she is now 'old'. I fall off my chair laughing. If she's old, what am I at 61?

And no, I don't feel at all old. In fact, after retiring from teaching five years ago I feel younger than I did then.

sluttygran Fri 22-Sep-17 14:41:11

Middle age begins at 70. No arguments, now - that's just the way it is! grin

ninathenana Fri 22-Sep-17 14:43:08

Today's BBC lunchtime news says they don't know the age or gender.
So where do the paper get the fact that it's a young woman ?

The "manic grins" on my post were to indicate that I didn't really think that 84 yr olds were hanging on by a thread.

Jaxie Fri 22-Sep-17 14:55:07

Ninathenana, It's assumed to be a woman as the greater proportion of exploited domestic servants is always women. Especially favoured by employers with no care for their employees are those from cultures where women do as they're told.

annsixty Fri 22-Sep-17 15:15:19

sluttygran and it goes on from 70 until at least 85.
Well that's my view.
