Tonight we had rinbeye steak with mama potatoes and a salad.

It occurred to me that my 'side' salads have probably been the same since we got married.

How do you make a side salad?

I make a side salad....but on the same plate.?
Shreds of lettuce and chopped up spring onions and ditto cucumber and cherry tomatoes all mixed up with a few spoonfuls of coleslaw and some Italian garlic seasoning.

Oh Kittylester I love a ribeye steak, but what's mama potatos?

lemongrove Fri 05-Jul-19 20:24:37

Mama potatoes?

lemongrove Fri 05-Jul-19 20:25:04

New potatoes?

Currently pea shoots rather than lettuce, red onion sliced thinly, cucumber, small tomatoes of some sort, grated carrot, avocado and sprinkles of mixed seeds. I sometimes add a grape or two or a strawberry. All small quantities. Mr C doesn’t use salad dressing of any kind, I usually add French dressing or balsamic.

lemongrove, I have my salad on the plate but dh likes his in a wooden bowl!

cornergran Fri 05-Jul-19 20:27:19

Meant to say I don’t eat steak but Mr C will be round kitty smile.

At this time of the year our side salads are made up from whatever's in the garden so at the moment it's mixed leaves, rocket, pea shoots, spring onions, bought tomatoes (ours are not quite ready) and thinly sliced cucumbers.

I chuck it all on the same plate though.

I'm so relieved! My side salad is mixed leaves, sliced red onions, peeled and deseeded cucumber and chopped sundried tomatoes. So not too different from others.

mmmm, i love rocket. Someone told me that rocket and coriander chopped up together is lovely.

MiniMoon Fri 05-Jul-19 20:58:54

My side salad is lettuce or mixed leaves, cucumber, sliced tomatoes, dried cranberries or raisins, maybe some sliced strawberries or diced apple (whatever fruit is to hand). DH and I can't eat onions any more.? All tossed in a dressing of some sort.

merlotgran Fri 05-Jul-19 21:06:33

My quick dressing is half olive oil to cider vinegar, a dollop of pomegranate molasses and a teaspoon of mustard and honey.

I marinate slices of cooked beetroot and red onion in the same dressing to use the following day.

You actually "make" a side salad? On a weekday? Just for you and the other half?

You don't just rinse a little gem under the tap and put it on his plate, with a tomato?

Wow! Posh or what? shock

Gonegirl Fri 05-Jul-19 21:15:21

Whaaat?! What's wrong with Marks and Sparks special?

merlotgran Fri 05-Jul-19 21:20:32

Gonegirl By the time DH has waded though one of my salads he wishes I had just rinsed a little gem under the tap. grin

Gonegirl Fri 05-Jul-19 21:25:31

Mine doesn't always get the little gem. Just a handle of cherry tomatos seems to do him nicely. grin Mostly when I cba to hot up frozen peas.

Tonight I had mixed salad leaves, half a tomato, 5 or 6 slices of cucumber, a couple of sliced radishes, a couple of chopped beetroots (Tesco's 'sweet and fiery' ones, my favourite!), all liberally sprinkled with cress and topped with a dessertspoonful of coleslaw.

Had this with a salmon steak which, come to think of it, looked much more like the 'side' on my plate than the salad did grin

I like a green salad.
Little gem lettuce or pea shoots with cucumber, spring onions and green pepper. Squeeze of lemon juice.
Sorted!

rosecarmel Fri 05-Jul-19 22:58:07

Sometimes I shred lettuce and radish and toss them together with a mix of olives- Its sort of like a "slaw"?

GabriellaG54 Fri 05-Jul-19 23:20:37

Mama potatoes?

JackyB Fri 05-Jul-19 23:29:05

Whatever's in the fridge.
