Making a battenberg cake today. The sponge that had the RED food dye came out GREEN.
Tastes fine but anyone know why it’s dull green not pink.

One of my very favourite cakes. Always buy them, and eat them too quickly. Only once have i had a home made one in the station cafe at Goathland W.Yorkshire. I couldn’t resist and it was wonderful. Sorry can’t help with the question, but just seeing it has brought a big smile to my face. Thankyou.

Who cares what colour it is, it looks delicious. I love them.
I had an aunt who used to make them for us along with her marzipan fruits at Christmas-time. All presented in a box.

Sadly not a baker, opened the thread because battenberg is my all time favourite cake and hoped to be offered a slice. Pink/green, don’t care, yum yum.

Battenberg cake was my dad's favourite (it was the marzipan he loved), so much so that we called it Daddy Cake.

We all want some Brenda.....

I have since red the food colouring bottle and it says not for cooking as it will discolour.!
I love marzipan and it was a trial not to eat it whilst making it!

Ah, mystery solved . That’s good. Enjoy.

It must be icing colouring.

Someone else can have my slice or I'll swap if anyone has a piece of walnut cake going begging grin

Earlier this year I bought some pink food colouring from Aldi to colour bath bombs; got the stuff out today to make bath bombs and the pink food colouring ................ had discoloured and tinted the bombs brown! Buy cheap, buy twice?

Bagsy your slice LadyGracie, although I have already taken a bite of the walnut cake!

Just as an aside (sorry can't help with food colouring problem Brenda )

Inside Mr Kiplings factory
(I think channel 5 catchup)
made interesting viewing.
Especially the production of the Battenburg cake.
