Want to get this new thread started as l like obscure facts.

Parsnips contain alot of calories.

Pantglas2 Sat 21-Sep-19 09:21:41

Compared to what? Cucumber or chocolate? Isn’t it all relative?

Dawn22 Sat 21-Sep-19 09:50:57

Vegetables per se are supposed to contain very few calories, parsnips are an exception to this. Thus in my opinion- a strange and little known but interesting fact.

Bananas are high in potassium - avoid if you have heart problems (heard about this somewhere )

Oh yes there is. You can find out on 'Something Rhymes With Purple' which is a Susie Dent & Gyles Brandreth podcast.

Diabetics can't eat grapefruit

Marydoll Sat 21-Sep-19 14:54:55

It is recommended, that when taking certain BP medicines, not to take grapefruit.

Why are diabetics not allowed to take it?

Marydoll Sat 21-Sep-19 14:56:18

Purple-hirple-thirple.

Tangerine Sat 21-Sep-19 22:38:12

You use up more calories chewing celery than there are calories in the actual celery. I have heard and read that. It may not be true but you often need to chew celery for quite a while.

Tangerine Sat 21-Sep-19 22:38:33

Norwich is further north than Birmingham.

A lot of people don't believe that when you tell them.

Sussexborn Sun 22-Sep-19 00:29:24

I know grapefruit can react with antidepressants but haven’t heard about diabetics not being able to eat it.

Marydoll Sun 22-Sep-19 00:29:35

Aaah, GagaJo, I was trying to work out what the fact was about myrtle. grin
I'm not very bright!!!
I suppose it could also depend on your accent whether it rhymes or not?.

Purple
hirple
thirple
myrtle
curple

Very conflicting advice when googled. Some saying grapefruit is fine and a few saying not to eat it.

Don't drink grapefruit juice if you're taking any of these medications, unless advised to by your doctor: Some statins (cholesterol-lowering drugs): lovastatin (Mevacor), atorvastatin (Lipitor), simvastatin (Zocor, Vytorin).24 Oct 2017

Both DH and I were told not to eat grapefruit by the diabetes nurse.
I don't really know why have never queried it as I don't like it anyway.
