Grandparents' Day

Sunday October 2nd is officially Grandparent's day - and we would love to know whether this is something that you embrace...or ignore? It appears many people don't even know of its existence! So we're keen to find out the gransnetters' views.

Did you know all about it already? Is it something that you feel should be made more of? Or is it merely a chance for greetings card manufacturers to cash in? We're really looking forward to hearing more.

Many thanks

I've heard of it but think it another American commercial import. Not for me, thanks. My family has always celebrated Mothers Day but only since we've had children have we celebrated Fathers Day - I never did with my own Father and didn't know anyone else who did either. They'll be a special day for pets soon - if there isn't already. Now there's a thought!!! hmm

harrigran Thu 22-Sep-11 23:03:19

I would ignore the day, just an excuse for shopkeepers to make more money. Let's face it, if you are a grandparent then you are also a mother or father and those days are covered already.

YUK! Another import from the U.S.A. I totally agree with Goldengirl and harrigran! I do hope my GC ignore it too!

grannyactivist Fri 23-Sep-11 00:31:57

Ignore. Definitely.

Baggy Fri 23-Sep-11 06:34:51

Yawn! Hey! We need a yawn emoticon!

Libradi Fri 23-Sep-11 09:12:54

Will definitely ignore it, at least my children will and I would encourage them if they even knew about it, not to bother. Complete waste of money.

kittylester Fri 23-Sep-11 09:17:47

Surely grandparents are also Mothers and Fathers so are already "catered" for?

susiecb Fri 23-Sep-11 09:33:14

Oh no! I would ignore it its a manufactured thing to make money for the card companies. i'll settle for a hug from my lot!

Gally Fri 23-Sep-11 09:39:07

Just commercialism. Never heard of it and not interested. Mothering Sunday was a religious day which was misappropriated (is that the word I need?) by others for their benefit and don't get me on Congratulations on your Divorce cards and all the others!

Load of rubbish!

Elegran Fri 23-Sep-11 10:20:58

If there are any days in the calendar left over, someone will soon inaugurate an "ordinary people without a day" day.

lucid Fri 23-Sep-11 10:38:17

Heartily agree with all the other grandparents.......no need to say more.

HildaW Fri 23-Sep-11 10:52:36

Lucid.........quite right!

GrannyTunnocks Fri 23-Sep-11 20:03:57

I agree. Ignore it. There are grandparent cards on Mother's Day and Father's Day anyway. Any excuse to make money.

greenmossgiel Fri 23-Sep-11 20:10:21

Ignore it! Surplus to requirements!

grandmaagain Sat 24-Sep-11 00:25:23

totally agree with all of the above!.. however my DDs always send my mother a Happy Mothers Day Great Grandma card and she absolutly loves it!! says " I never knew there was such a thing are"nt they good" so it takes all sorts smile

glammanana Sun 25-Sep-11 12:02:11

goldengirl I'm sorry to tell you this but there was a card in local card shop for Mother's day from "the dog or cat",also one from "Your Son's Girlfriend" what a load of rubbish, the way my boy's change girlfriend's I would forget who sent what.Only card's that interest me are from my DCs on Mother's or Father's Day.

supernana Sun 25-Sep-11 13:44:27

Utter tish, trash and twaddle...

elderflower1 Sun 25-Sep-11 13:49:52

Never heard of it, and won't be telling children or grandchildren about it. Another way of getting us to boost the economy.

absentgrana Mon 26-Sep-11 11:06:12

Looks like the idea has been pretty comprehensively trashed – and quite right too.

iPadGrandma Mon 26-Sep-11 12:07:32

Absolutely agree with all the above comments. As a matter of interest, Cari, by whose decree is it "officially" grandparents' day on 2nd October?

JosieGransnet (GNHQ) Mon 26-Sep-11 12:21:02

Apparently, Age Concern introduced National Grandparents Day in 1990.

We can see it's pretty unpopular, but does anyone think there's anything redeemable at all about this idea?!

supernana Mon 26-Sep-11 12:56:57

Nah!

HildaW Mon 26-Sep-11 16:00:47

Ahhh Josie, I suppose they wanted to raise awareness, highlight what Grandparents do for families etc. The trouble is any mention of a special day puts it firmly into the 'sheer commercialism' category. Our families do tend to appreciate us on the whole and if they don't an artificially arranged special day is hardly going to change that. Its the dreaded 'Powers that be' that need reminding and I'm not sure a 'Happy Grandparent's Day' is going to do that. We can hardly go on strike because its our families that would suffer but if all the Grannnies and Grandads who supply free high quality childcare as well as all the other things they do suddenly stopped work methinks the country would grind to a halt.
