CherryCezzy Thu 23-Apr-20 21:41:50

Yes I know my blood group and I really want to be able to give blood but I am not allowed.

I have donated since I was 17 and given twice a year since ,just a 2 year break a couple of years ago ,I will see if they will let me donate again as I always feel if you can you should...My mother would have died giving birth to me if she hadn't had a blood transfusion .

I'm still giving it if you are already a donor you can continue until 70,I'll keep going till I'm too old or something happens that I can't. I'm a very common blood group

A+ for me but I was told when I reached 65 I could no longer give so Gabriella I remember from a prev post you said you were 74 ???

Funny that a lot of you say you can't donate due to iron deficiency. You'd think, as a vegetarian for 50 years and not one who eats fish other than cod or very occasionally, tinned tuna or many greens, that I'd have low iron but no. Mine drops very easily. A will of iron...that's the secret. ??

If you've ever had a blood transfusion when pregnant or whilst giving birth, you cannot donate again.

Mine's O pos. Between 135-150 donations so far. Lost count unless I check online. Last donated in Feb.

Duffy rh negative here. Not giving blood for a year as low iron at the moment

TrendyNannie6 Thu 16-Apr-20 18:07:50

Well done calendargirl that’s fantastic ?

TrendyNannie6 Thu 16-Apr-20 18:05:51

Chestnut I know my mum was A group but not sure whether pos or neg, I’m also allergic to Amoxocillin, yes very interesting,

grannysyb Thu 16-Apr-20 17:36:46

Can't give blood because I have had malaria and what used to be called "yellow jaundice" and at 72 think I'm too old! Otherwise would happily have donated.

Oopsadaisy3 Thu 16-Apr-20 17:08:02

I’m not telling anyone my blood group, but I used to donate until I had to take AntiHistamine tablets and found that I was allergic to Penicillin, I was then stopped from donating.

Chestnut Thu 16-Apr-20 17:05:44

TrendyNannie - my mother was allergic to penicillin but not me. I'm allergic to Trimethoprim and nicotine patches which give me second degree burns!
I would love to do a family tree of blood groups but don't know everyone's group. I think it's interesting. I got my negative from my father who was A negative.

TrendyNannie6 Thu 16-Apr-20 16:26:00

I’m also allergic to penicillin,

TrendyNannie6 Thu 16-Apr-20 16:25:23

Oh you are the same as me chestnut, I don’t know anyone else with mine, yes the rarest, unfortunately I cannot give blood, I’d have loved to,

growstuff Thu 16-Apr-20 16:00:30

Surprising number of AB+s on here. I'm not allergic to penicillin, but I am allergic to Ibuprofen. My ex-hubby was AB+ too and had lots of allergies.

growstuff Thu 16-Apr-20 15:57:21

I'm AB+. They don't want AB+ blood from females who've had children.

Alishka Thu 16-Apr-20 13:38:33

0, and I've a card in my wallet saying so, so I'm a 'universal donor' apparently.
Can't donate blood cos of the cancer I had 20yrs ago.
DS in the USA - they won't accept his blood cos he's English. Deeply suspect,English blood, apparently.

toscalily Thu 16-Apr-20 12:25:21

Yes, I'm B Positive and allergic to Penicillin plus other past issues so would be unable to donate. This percentage list is interesting: www.blood.co.uk/why-give-blood/blood-types/

Calendargirl Thu 16-Apr-20 12:10:28

Hope to give my 100th donation later this year.
B+.

My life was saved as a new born baby nearly 70 years ago when I had two transfusions.

Feel I have repaid my debt to the people who donated for me.

Tangerine Thu 16-Apr-20 11:12:37

A Rh Positive. I donated blood for years but, for a variety of reasons, they won't take it now.

bikergran Thu 16-Apr-20 11:06:52

Ive no idea....should I know? confused

fiorentina51 Thu 16-Apr-20 10:21:49

I'm A+. I donated for over 20 years but for various reasons stopped about 20 years ago.
I had a blood transfusion after the birth of my first child and as a consequence, developed Anti Kell antibodies. I'm 69 now so not sure whether I can donate or not.

ExD Thu 16-Apr-20 09:57:42

I am AB too but a boring rhesus positive. They won't take my blood any more, I'm too old.
