A couple of years ago I had a very nasty bout of gastritis out of the blue -in hindsight I think stress of bereavements and a house move a bit before played a large part,my digestive system does seem to be my weak point health wise.I was prescribed several months of omeprazole and sent for an endoscopy,as I was also experiencing a very croaky voice obviously down to acid reflux. I already knew I had a smallish hiatus hernia.
By the time I saw a consultant for the results -which showed a small patch of oesophagus visibly showing Barretts, but on histology not confirmed by cell displasia- I had decided to sort out my diet ,which wasn't bad anyway but probably my previous strong coffee x2 a day hadnt helped.I told the consultant as I was feeling so much better I didn't want to continue on Omeprazole and he was very sniffy about it and basically said well don't bother coming back for a repeat endoscopy,I will sign you off.
Stupidly in recent weeks I have let my coffee habit creep back in,and we've had a very sociable patch with lots of meals out ,plus I've been tired and developed a sweet tooth. My own fault I know but back came a other huge flare up of gastritis.Back to the GP who immediately dished out Omeprazole. But did say she felt I should have been kept in the system and had a repeat endoscopy anyway, and has re referred me.
I'm frustrated with myself for lapsing but after being on Omeprazole for several weeks and feeling better in some ways, but worse in others ,and having read about the side effects I just dont want to be on any PPIs long term.Plus my gut instinct (!) is that my digestive issues owe more to possibly a systemic overload of candida or something similar.I have fungal toes again, and they had cleared up after a course of Turbinefine, when I have to say I never felt fitter or more energetic and seemed to be able to eat anything.
I have a feeling that overdoing the sugary stuff has thrown my digestion out of kilter and now having less acid production due to the Omeprazole is actually doing more harm than good. I have started taking a daily probiotic, and I've never smoked, always been slim and drink very little alchohol.None at the moment actually.
Thanks for reading this long post.I guess what I'm saying is I want the courage to go to my GP and say that I don't think weeks of Omeprazole is the answer.Plus it seems to give me occasional sudden flare of nasty watery diarhoea.
Anyone else out there had a similar experience. Thanks.
