Do you have any irrational economies?

I used to have a gas cooker that had to be lit with a match, and I used to save the spent match to light one burner from another. Eventually, I realised how daft it was and bought a petrol wand ( I have never been able to use a cigarette lighter)

My latest economy is perhaps not so silly, as it is saving water (not that we are short of it round here!) My toilet broke, and while I was waiting for the plumber I had to use a bucket to flush. Next day, when the toilet was repaired, I looked at my full bath and thought .......hm, no point in wasting that. Now, I use it to wash my previous day's clothes, as I have no machine, and then to flush the toilet. My water is metered, so it probably is saving me a tiny amount of cash, but it mainly makes me feel good thatI am not wasting a resource that is so scarce in some parts of the world.

At my local Asda I saw a lady in dressing gown and slippers last week (11 a.m.). I have seen this closer to the city, but it's a first in my village! I would not have the nerve.shock

Wow! There's a 24 hour Asda just down the road. Will they notice my fleece dressing gone and dainty sheepskin booties? Could with a new pair. grin

Carpe diem indeed! Greatnan, are you not about to leave? Will miss you, but enjoy every minute.

My mother worked with a woman who spent money on hardly anything other than the basic necessities. She said she was saving for her retirement, when she would have all the holidays she wanted. She died at 60 and her widower remarried a much younger woman who had a whale of a time spending the cash. Carpe Diem.

riclorian and then the new carpet wore out twice as fast because of the uneven underlay ......

riclorian Sun 04-Dec-11 11:15:57

My Grandmother ( who was well off ) would buy a new carpet and promptly put the old one on top !!!! I also waste a lot of water waiting for the hot to come through to the kitchen and DH has decided that it is cheaper , as we are on a meter , to fill and use the kettle .Another economy of mine is to save inner bags of cereal boxes , they come in very handy for storing food in fridge and freezer as they are water proof . What an interesting thread , please keep ideas coming as we all need to economise at the moment .

According to my husband all of our economies are rational. But then he did warn me before we married that his motto in life was, 'Use it up, wear it out, make it do, or do without'. confused

jingl that made me laugh too!

I have a friend who goes from supermarket to supermarket buy the cheapest items in each - must cost twice as much in petrol as she saves!

yogagran Sat 03-Dec-11 20:11:25

And they last for several years!

jingl Sat 03-Dec-11 15:34:54

No Charlotta, you're not. M & S ones are the only ones that fit properly.

Charlotta Sat 03-Dec-11 15:27:08

I economise and think my economies are rational - using up left over food etc. What irritates me are the economies that other people make. I have a well off neighbour who has had 2 flats and a house left to them in the last five years. All that rent coming in, but when I visit her, she has old blankets covering up her sofa and easy chairs and they don't have a dog. I don't see the sense in that and then there is the queueing up for petrol- a penny cheaper, to save 50P by people who have large cars which cost so much more to run, that a few pounds woudn't make any difference. Then they cruise round town just because they don't want to pay to park.

Heh! I always buy my knickers at M&S, have done since I started buying my own clothes. Have I missed something?

Annobel Sat 03-Dec-11 14:20:40

I don't think that is an 'irrational' economy, Ariadne! Makes perfect sense to me and I got some really nice ones in Sainsbury's last summer. I buy socks from the children's department in M&S - the biggest size of boys' socks, all the same colour, in a pack of five pairs, so there are always matching socks available.

Ariadne Sat 03-Dec-11 13:26:18

Oh, I do wear knickers, Gracesmum! It's just that I can't bear to spend a fortune on them, so it's M&S or - now, Sainsburys!

I do have a couple of little frilly numbers lurking in the knicker drawer, but I mean "little". Oh no....

jingl Sat 03-Dec-11 11:30:12

Thank you Maniac. Off to do that now, Will be much cheaper than boiling on stove. smile

Maniac Fri 02-Dec-11 22:46:42

It's quicker and more effective to clean washcloths by
microwaving in a bowl of water (with spash of eco liquid and cover lightly)

irrationally I collect up unused paper napkins after a meal out.and keep in polythene bag for wiping greasy pans, surfaces etc,

jingl Fri 02-Dec-11 22:15:24

Oh! Nobody's answered my question yet!

You don't really read these do you!

Is no-one any good at physics?

gracesmum Fri 02-Dec-11 21:05:40

That is a good one Oxon70 . Modern houses don't lend themselves to water saving the way older ones do/did. Our last 2 houses were old with down pipes/kitchen wastes that went into an open drain with a grille so you culd "catch" bath water etc to re use in the garden and my Mum always used to use the washing up water on the roses - swore by it for dealing with greenfly.
