At the Essex Sound and Video Archive (part of the Essex Record Office), we hold a large collection of oral history interviews conducted with past and present residents of the county. We are developing a Heritage Lottery Fund application for a project called You Are Hear: sound and a sense of place, which aims to digitise some of our recordings and encourage people to learn about and enjoy them. Some of the interviews we hold were collected many years ago, so the accompanying paperwork authorising our use of the recordings is not always as complete as it should be. To help us obtain permission to use them for the project, we are asking if anyone with knowledge of the individuals, or their relatives, could get in touch. You can see a list of the interviewees for Chelmsford and the surrounding areas, plus more information about the project, on our blog:

I'd be very grateful for any information!

We are also looking for a group of volunteers to adopt one of our 'listening benches'. We plan to install benches with speakers across Essex, one in Chelmsford, so people can listen to extracts from our collections while they are relaxing on the bench. We would like volunteers to listen to our recordings, choose which pieces they like best, and put them together in an audio montage to be played on the bench. We can train anyone who is willing to learn! We would then like the group to adopt the bench to look after it for the future.
