Testing the water for a "Northern mini-national"

There was talk of a National meetup a little while ago, but nothing concrete seems to have happened about it. There was a lot of general interest then, but how many people are still interested and would come to an all-day meeting in Edinburgh in November/December? If there are enough to make it worth the effort of organising it, I shall make a detailed plan and agenda and take serious names.

Central Edinburgh is a magical place around Christmas, so a meeting at a date from the end of November would be good (St Andrews Day is the 30th November, highly suitable, and the decorations and entertainments in Princes St Gardens open just before that) Time for gift shopping could be built in.

Here is a possible scenario - a meeting room overlooking the castle booked for the day from 9 to 5, with three tea/coffee/cake/biscuit breaks, a buffet lunch, and a couple of talks on relevant subjects, plus time for limitless socialising and retail therapy on Princes St. This would cost, at a very vague reckoning, about £25 a head plus £7.50 each for lunch. A bit of negotiation might bring it down, but that is a conjecture, so is a spot of fundraising of some kind to offset the cost. (GN have indicated that they are not able to offer any funding) Other places might be cheaper or dearer, but this is somewhere that we know does a good lunch and afternoon tea and has a nice atmosphere. There is a lift. There would be room for up to 40.

There are usually travel deals on at that time of year. There are a lot of hotels/B&Bs etc in Edinburgh, (lists are available from the information centre), and we might get a bulk rate if several people want to stay over in the the same place.

I don't know yet whether this will be viable, so there is no guarantee that it will happen, but it could be a very enjoyable day. If you are interested enough to be counted in provisionally, please pm me.

I'd be interested Elegran, if on 30th Nov would probably leave after lunch as I'm going to something in the evening.

wisewoman Tue 24-Sep-13 15:27:44

I would be interested in this. I am only half an hour on the train away from Edinburgh. Sounds like a lot of work Elegran for you. Well done for taking it on.

Elegran Tue 24-Sep-13 15:54:42

So a few at least would be there! Let's see how many answer in the next few days.

Wisewoman - don't speak too soon! It is early days yet and I may not take it on at all! This is just dipping a toe in the water to see how cold it is.

gracesmum Tue 24-Sep-13 15:57:01

I would have loved this, but have arranged to meet up with a St Andrews friend (we go back a loooooong way!) locally for the day and she has booked her travel alreadysad.
smile to see her I mean , butsad not to meet the rest of you!

Elegran Tue 24-Sep-13 16:06:03

It may not end up on that day, Gracesmum nothing is set yet, so we may see you after all.

moomin Tue 24-Sep-13 16:09:02

Subject to dates I'm interested smile

Elegran Tue 24-Sep-13 16:19:02

Watch this space, Moomin

Granny23 Tue 24-Sep-13 16:37:15

Count me in. A wee suggestion - maybe 10am to 6pm would be easier for those travelling on the day - would avoid the rush hour at both ends of the day.

Elegran Tue 24-Sep-13 16:38:40

About ten for it so far, a couple of "it depends if . ." and a couple of "Wish I could but it is not possible).

This is not just for those in the north, remember. People from the deep south are welcome too, if they are brave enough to venture up.

Elegran Tue 24-Sep-13 16:41:23

It will be good to see you, *Granny23" The start would probably not be high-powered, so arriving at 10 would not mean anyone would miss anything much. The place I am thinking of is 9-5, but I daresay people could linger on until 6 if they bought another cup of tea as an excuse!

Gally Tue 24-Sep-13 17:04:23

Cup of tea Elegran? shock Everyone will be drowning in it by then!

Elegran Tue 24-Sep-13 17:07:59

Choose your own beverage, then, Gally. They have a bar!

thatbags Tue 24-Sep-13 17:12:20

Yes. Count me in.

Jenner Tue 24-Sep-13 17:12:20

Would love to. Not sure of travel costs though. Can look into it and see. Can only do weekends as working.

thatbags Tue 24-Sep-13 17:14:15

I wouldn't be there by nine either. More like tennish.

Elegran Tue 24-Sep-13 17:19:29

Weekends would be better for everyone, I think, but that could be the cue for a dozen posts from people who can only come through the week . . .

Whatever day it is, I don't think it can completely get going too soon. If it is available earlier then the early birds can start on the coffee and catch up on the gossip.

YaYaJen Tue 24-Sep-13 17:35:59

I am interested, the earlier a definite date is set the more likely it is that I can get an advance cheap train ticket, not been to Edinburgh for years and would be lovely to visit again so yes as long as train fare not extortionate.

Grandmanorm Tue 24-Sep-13 17:36:18

As long as DH is fine I would love to be there. I have missed the Edinburgh meetings due to DH but with a bit of luck he should be fine by then.

Elegran Tue 24-Sep-13 17:51:32

YaYaJen As soon as a date and place are fixed you will hear about it. Grandmanorm I do hope DH is well enough for you to come. fingers crossed.

You mention travel deals Elegran. For information, the current ScotRail Club 55 offer, which lets you travel in Scotland (and from Carlisle and Berwick, I think, but not on East Coast trains) for £19 return finishes on the 30th November.

Elegran Tue 24-Sep-13 19:35:44

Thanks, an argument for holding it on 30th November.

GillieB Tue 24-Sep-13 19:53:11

I would have liked to have come, but can't do the 30th November, I am afraid. It sounds like a lovely idea, though. Good luck with getting something organised.

Anne58 Tue 24-Sep-13 20:04:30

Too far from Devon, but hope it all goes well and that you have a lovely time.

juneh Tue 24-Sep-13 20:43:46

It would be nice but a bit too far from North Wales it would be good to get together with other editors too. Maybe we could arrange something midway somewhere. I like your idea smile
