Nightmare for Cornwall

As if the losses to the hospitality industry weren’t enough to cope with and lockdown has meant “staycations” if you are lucky enough to get a break at all, pity the poor residents of this corner of Cornwall.
A “ring of steel” has been thrown around Cornwall for the G7 summit, with the Royal Navy watching for threats from the air, including drones, as 11,000 police officers and 150 sniffer dogs attempt to protect world leaders.
With the three-day meeting in Carbis Bay starting tomorrow, Devon and Cornwall Police have called in wide-ranging support from the Ministry of Defence.
Naval vessels, aircraft, sniffer dogs, logistics support facilities and bomb disposal teams will all be on standby.
My neighbour (and friend’s) son has been sent down for the duration as he is in charge of the Paramedic/Ambulance services and is not looking forward to it one bit.
They’ll be ready for a holiday when it is over.

But Maizie Cornwall is a completely blue area, so all those towns would naturally have a Tory MP. Unless you want to bypass the area altogether.

MaizieD Sun 13-Jun-21 08:51:47

I'd like to know what criteria was used to choose these towns

Wasn't it that the area had to have a tory MP?

www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2021/mar/03/sunaks-1bn-of-town-deals-will-nearly-all-go-to-tory-constituencies

Remember the local elections this year where voters in some places were explicitly told that their council would only get extra funding if it was tory? There's nothing secret about tory tactics...

The G7 leaders will be enjoying the massively EU funded Eden Project and flying off from the massively EU funded Newquay airport. Before anyone comes into saying the UK will now fund all these things I would say - don’t hold your breath ( unless a Tory donor is involved).

JaneJudge.....your comment about hoping that they do not abuse their power....ahahahahaha!

I live close to one of the most deprived areas of Cornwall. Clay Pits Area .Whilst I was pleased to hear that some towns were to get a total of £89 million, I'm angered that the poorest ones are not included in this package.

Only three towns are receiving it: Camborne, Penzance and St Ives and Truro (city). Camborne is the most highly deprived area, closely followed by St Austell, Bodmin, Redruth and Newquay. What money are they getting? None!

Whilst trying to understand why these other towns are not getting a penny, I discover that in 2019 Robert Jenrick (Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government) launched the Towns Deals scheme to improve community assets and encourage economic regeneration. Truro, Camborne, St Ives & Penzance were chosen to work up a bid for funding worth up to £25 million per town, as part of the Government’s £3.6 billion UK wide fund.

I'd like to know what criteria was used to choose these towns. Truro is not classed as a socially deprived area and apart from one estate in Penzance, that isn't either.

He states that: “The towns fund will help level up the country, creating jobs and building stronger and more resilient local economies.”

I hope the town fund will create jobs and affordable housing but looking at some of the projects, I doubt this will happen.

Sorry Boris, it is not a G7 present. The government invited Camborne to bid for the Town Funding in November 2019. The plan to hold G7 in Cornwall in 2021 was a long way off.

How lovely to read so many positive comments from folk on here.
I had wondered if possibly the Queen had travelled to Cornwall on the royal train.

Her energy at 95 years old is incredible isn’t it?

Lots of people thirty years younger would struggle with her workload.

The Red Arrows were busy today too doing the fly past in Windsor for the Trooping of the Colour, then putting on an aerobatic display over St. Ives this evening.
Pretty impressive.

She was bright and chirper for the mini parade in Windsor this morning. Looked like a very comfy bed on the train.

And entering the Bidens tomorrow.

How does she do it? I feel exhausted at the thought.

Just read the Queen was given a new corgi puppy on Thursday (D of E’s birthday. Maybe that helped put the smile on her face.

Ellianne - Presumably Exeter St. David’s rather than Exeter Central. Were there many people on the station watching?

Yes, St. David's. It stopped at 22.15 on its way back to London. The station looks deserted. I hope the Queen got a good night's sleep on board.

Apparently the Queen travelled down on the royal train which was seen passing through Taunton.

Yes, it stopped here in Exeter.

Thank you Whocantell for some positive news from someone who knows rather than conjecture.

I don't think Wilfred will be going to all the meetings.

HM has been vaccinated and can decide for herself how close she wants to get to people.

Ellianne Sat 12-Jun-21 14:51:20

Just a tiny correction. Wilfred turned one a few months ago.
Lovely for him to get some fresh sea air rather than being in stuffy London this last week.

GrannyGear Sat 12-Jun-21 14:42:31

Does no-one else think it crazy to bring a baby less than a yer old and an old lady over ninety into a crowded gathering of people from all over the world? Isn't there pandemic going on? And aren't we supposed to limit travel and "socialising"? Little Wilf is probably OK because babies don't seem susceptible to Covid. But I'm sorry for HM. I suppose she feels it is her duty to turn up even at this risk of catching covid.
imho Boris should have refused to admit both of them!

NotSpaghetti Sat 12-Jun-21 10:01:12

I think there are definitely benefits to being able to meet in person as non-formal things are very hard to work out on zoom. However, why can't they go somewhere really easy to get to, somewhere with plenty of space and no need to bring so much stuff in?

What about one of the military bases for example? Or somewhere else totally closed off such as the England team football base camp?
I can't help but think it would be easier and it is after all, just work.

Callistemon Sat 12-Jun-21 09:32:27

Thank you Whocantell

Cornwall Council announcement yesterday...

"As the G7 Summit gets underway today, we're celebrating the Government's announcement of an £89 million cash windfall for Cornwall as a long-term legacy of the event.

Cornwall is to benefit from new investment to regenerate its town centres and natural landscapes, as well as funding to make the area the first net zero carbon region."

Ellianne Sat 12-Jun-21 08:42:19

Well said from someone who knows, Whocantell.
The media will hone in on anyone with a negative comment because that is what they do. Yes, it would be very boring if the journalists reported that everything was going well!

Whocantell Sat 12-Jun-21 08:36:50

I live a few miles down the road from Carbis Bay and have to say most people are pretty happy, even excited about the G7 taking place here. The media will home in on anyone with a negative comment because that is what they do.

The covid issue is also a red herring - there are around 10,000 people tops associated with the G7 (number of police is more like 6,500, not 11,000). Last week we had over 400,000 holiday makers, many staying in the local area - I think the covid risk is far greater from that.
Oh, and everyone at the G7 is getting tested every day.

Yes, there is the environmental impact, but it is miniscule compared to what goes on every day.

We have much bigger issues to deal with down here. Hosting this global event is a positive for the County - the disruption is just for a few days. The worse outcome is that everything stays the same.

No nimbyism here!
