Think Brexit’s all over?
Wait until the grace periods end.
1 October 2021 —Pre-notification and export health certificates (EHCs) required for animal-origin products.
1 January 2022 —Physical checks to begin at the border, including on animal and plants products, along with requirements for safety and security declarations.
March 2022 —Physical checks to begin on live animals and low-risk plant products.
Despite the best efforts of 87 % of the mainstream media (by circulation) trying to distract you from the battering Brexit is giving to business up and down the UK, news is at last filtering through. And, bad as this news is, we have yet to see the worst because the Trade and Cooperation Agreement (TCA) contains a number of grace periods which are putting off the evil hour when Brexit finally, genuinely bites. What’s more, the TCA itself has not yet been ratified by the European Parliament, so we face yet another Brexit cliff-edge at the end of this month and could still end up with no-deal Brexit.

Also relationships, house and home, finance, ask a gran, health, even jokes occasionally probably others too, Pretty wide range but I guess some people have very blinkered recollections.
What has that got to do with the claimed 'misandry'? The poster being talked about posted mainly in this forum, News & Politics. As you don't seem to have posted here until well after he'd stopped posting I was wondering what basis you had for the misandry claim.

You could try, Ellianne but it may fall on deaf ears!
Why not offer people who are unemployed the chance to train and qualify as HGV drivers. Offering to pay for the training may well be an incentive. The hospitality industry also has many jobs that are unfilled. Similar incentives might encourage people who are unemployed into the sector.
“As you don't seem to have posted here until well after he'd stopped posting I was wondering what basis you had for the misandry claim.”
I do remember Grandad, Rufus and a few other regular posters, they all got the message that male opinions are not wanted, in fact there was a thread dedicated to male posters, the verdict, no thanks.
Rufus still posts regularly.
I find that most of the male posters who post don't feel the need to keep telling us that they are male.
We used to run a small haulage company. Delivering tanker goods. The cost of getting a hgv test is large. Few companies now cover the cost as it’s in the thousands and any driver can leave immediately after taking the test. The last cohort of drivers who were taught by employers have just now retired.
Tramping or roaming as it’s called when the driver is out all week and living in the cab is hard on a personal level. Coupled with a new exam they had to take (even though they had been doing the job for 30 years and many said enough and left then.
We found that no women wanted the job!
The facilities around the country are dire and drivers are treated badly by the people they actually deliver to. Imagine not being allowed to use the toilet or canteen as it’s “for our employees only!”
That this dearth of drivers was going to occur was known 15 years ago. With brexit and covid it’s a perfect storm
I refuse to go on motorways because of the lorries. They are so big and I hate being between them. The government should make training free and extremely rigorous. I agree with the poster who said it should be treated as a profession. It is a highly-skilled job.
A bit off topic but I'm now getting adverts in GN for HGV driver training companies!

You're just making things up, Katie59. I mentioned two male posters who have posted recently on this very forum. No-one objected to them posting because they are male. In fact, that little detail went completely unnoticed. It's content that matters, not the gender of the poster.
As GG13 pointed out, Rufus is still posting..
I've never seen many male posters on Gnet. I think the name puts them off...
It would be interesting to know what percentage of lorries, as opposed to private cars, is involved in traffic accidents each year. I suspect that there would be a lower percentage of accidents involving lorries because, on the whole, HGV drivers are extremely skilled. My DP was a logistics manager for 40+ years, for big companies. Over that period very few of the vehicles in his area were involved in accidents (but I know that anecdote doesn't trump data)I did try googling this and either got some very out of date information or massive spreadsheets to try and extract it from. Lost the will to live
Cfaz49, thank you for your post. So they've known there would be a shortage for FIFTEEN YEARS?

Not strictly true, Katie.
Rufus is still here, you could join his evening thread if you wished.
Grandad got a bit annoyed with any female poster who moaned about their OH and accused them of misandry. He must have left in disgust at grumbles about men's shortcomings.
There are other male posters on here, they just don't usually think it's important to mention it, they just join in the discussions.

I can drive a 7.5 ton horsebox and it was a dream, which I will never now fulfil, to be able to drive one of those giant artics which went thundering past us on motorways!

My sons new partner would love to train for HGV, at present a bus driver, very poor pay, she has worked all through this pandemic. Cost prohibitive for training, poor wages again after gaining licence. No go, and that is one reason for lack of drivers.
CFaz49
My friend sold his haulage company in 2009, long before we were talking about brexit.
His reasons were the same as yours and a lot more. It broke his heart as he lived and breathed haulage but came to the sad conclusion that it just wasn’t worth the hassle anymore.
An interesting read , predicted well before 2019, and Covid.

Isn't it strange though that some people complained so bitterly about foreigners stealing their jobs, be it in agriculture, building, care, etc, etc, and now HGV drivers - but there is no-one to replace them, or who want to replace them.
Yes, like doctors, nurses, and many more- the shortages were foreseen and would have happened anyhow, but Brexit, topped by Covid- have multiplied those issues many manyfold.
It is due to several factors which have happened gradually over many years as Cfaz49 has stated.
Covid and the subsequent lack of testing has had a large impact over the past 18 months.

Whilst I acknowledge that there is a shortage of HGV drivers I can confirm that the M25 is full of the bu**ers
(We are on our way to DH brother’s funeral)
I did note the other day that there seemed to be more HGVs on the road since last year.
We don't get out much, perhaps I'd forgotten how nerve-wracking motorway driving can be!
We certainly noticed recently how fewer foreign lorries are on our MWays. On several long journeys recently on MWays, we never saw one Stobbart lorry either. After I noticed, we activally looked for one, and we spent many hours on several MWays recently.
