I'm in shock.

Legendary film-maker and lifelong political activist Ken Loach could be ejected from the Labour Party, it has been rumoured on social media.

It comes after Sir Keir Starmer purged 1,000 Labour leftwingers from four “poisonous” campaign groups as the party clamps down on supporters of the leader’s predecessor, Jeremy Corbyn.

Disgraceful What sort of Labour Party is Starmer leading?

twitter.com/PhillipsBarrie/status/1419707047336157184?s=20

Ken Loach a man who spends his multi award winning professional life, fighting for the underprivileged and exposing Tory societies abominations is being expelled from the Labour Party, by a leader who takes money from Israel and writes for Murdoch! "BEYOND WORDS!"

Ken Loach has done more for the underprivileged, the homeless and the hungry than Starmer and Evans and the whole shadow cabinet will ever do.

Has he, has he campaigned, such as Marcus Rashford, and achieved something, has he put his money were his mouth is or does he just make films to make money.

Doodledog Wed 28-Jul-21 08:05:51

If only those who have campaigned and put their money where their mouths are should be in political parties they would have very few members.

Making films is Loach’s job - of course he does it for money. Do you think people should work for nothing? I’m really not sure what your point is.

This might be the final straw for me. I’ve been in and out of the LP over the years, always in opposition, and largely in the hope of tempering Tory excesses. I will never vote Tory, and I don’t like the Lib Dems (even less so as a party to suck up the disaffected from the rest), so it’s not ideal for me, but it’s reaching the point where I will have to resign again.

Anniebach Wed 28-Jul-21 08:18:31

Why would groups need to support Corbyn not the elected leader ? Do they want Corbyn back as party leader ?

Of course he makes films for money, and no I don’t expect him to work for nothing. But he does not have the same reach as. Marcus Rashford, who really manages to make change. Loach makes the right noises but has no punch, is extremely left wing, which most of this country won’t tolerate which is why Corbyn lost, thank goodness. We all want fairness and equality, but as in Animal Farm, ‚‘all animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others‘. So in a left wing world also this would very much apply.

lemongrove Wed 28-Jul-21 09:20:21

Maybe Loach has just got too OTT ( he was always going that way) as he got older and is one of the ones causing more division within the Party.

Greeneyedgirl Wed 28-Jul-21 09:23:09

The Labour Party is in decline and these expulsions will only hasten its demise.

Whatdayisit Wed 28-Jul-21 09:35:21

Ken Loach doesn't have the same reach as Marcus Rashford.
????

I am not going against the amazing work Rashford has done but what a statement. They have both worked to highlight inequality.

How many men in society have had their life changed as boys from watching Kes. And Kathy Come Home is still lauded as an eye opening film all these decades later.

Doodledog Wed 28-Jul-21 10:25:55

I agree, Whatdayisit. It's hardly fair to set Rashford up as the bar to be measured against, is it?

And yes - Loach's films have been so influential for decades that it's impossible to say that he's had a limited reach. From Cathy Come Home to Sorry We Missed You, they have shown how the lives of working people are affected by government policies over the years. Ladybird Ladybird is one of the most powerful films I've seen, too.

There won’t be a party at this rate. It stopped being a ‘Labour’ party a long time ago.

avitorl Wed 28-Jul-21 10:39:27

I joined the Labour Party after watching "I Daniel Blake". It is a film that everyone should see.
I like Keir Starmer but I think expelling Ken Loach would be a huge mistake.I'm not sure what I would do about my membership if this were to happen.

Grany Wed 28-Jul-21 10:40:32

Ken Loach has spent his whole life, used all of his amazing creativity, exposing Tory lies and corruption, fighting against poverty, homelessness and injustice, fighting for us.

If Starmer allows Ken to be expelled from the Labour Party, why would any decent person stay.

labourbriefing.org/blog/2021/5/13/a-letter-from-ken-loach

We reprint below a letter from Ken Loach to Labour Party General Secretary, David Evans. Ken has received no reply.

Anniebach Wed 28-Jul-21 10:41:22

Kathy Come Home was filmed 55 years ago , Kes 51 years ago.

2021 people can relate to Marcus Rashford

Whatdayisit Wed 28-Jul-21 10:53:18

Yes of course they can and hopefully they will in 2072 - talking about his achievements and hopefully there will be more.
But 2021 folk also relate to Kes still - in some circles it is one of the most quoted films. Many boys have only read one book because of watching that film.
And most of his work is still relatable in 2021.
My point was we don't need to make somebody's lifelong work irrelevant because there is a new kid on the block. And that is not being disrespectful to Marcus Rashford. I think it could be seen as ageist which is something we shouldn't be on an old dears forum.

Grany Wed 28-Jul-21 10:58:42

Kathy come home film was debated in parliment and caused changes in law. There are more recent films too dealing with pertinent issues of the day poverty ect homelessness, the Tory government callousness towards ordinary people.

Anniebach Wed 28-Jul-21 10:59:07

I didn’t say his work was irrelevant and referring to Rashford as
the new kid on the block is dismissing his work.

Ilovecheese Wed 28-Jul-21 11:18:14

Nobody, but nobody, dismissed the work of Marcus Rashford.

There is no need to compare the two men. They are both good men with decent values.

Whatdayisit Wed 28-Jul-21 11:27:03

I certainly would never dismiss the work of Marcus Rashford. I think what Lincslass posted is ridiculous and i have no idea why Marcus Rasford was brought in to it in that way.

trisher Wed 28-Jul-21 11:30:19

I hope in 50 years time Marcus Rashford is still true to his principles and working like Ken Loach. But it isn't a matter of setting one against the other, both are valued by the general public, both have worked for the good of others, both have very special skills.
The point is that the LP who have benefitted massively from the link with Loach are now behaving in such an undemocratic way that he is threatening to leave. Quite why that is acceptable to anyone I don't know. He is a committed socialist and his films have turned public opinion and promoted left wing causes. So perhaps that's the point the LP no longer stands up for the weakest and poorest.

Lucca Wed 28-Jul-21 11:32:45

Exactly.

GagaJo Wed 28-Jul-21 12:42:56

It seems to me we are going to end up with two right wing parties. A mid right, ex Labour party and a more extreme (which is the way the Tories are going) right wing party.

And I REALLY don't understand the posters who think that leftie Labour supporters should just suck it up and go along with Starmer's Labour. Some of us can't (not won't) vote against our principles.

Ken Loach exposes the inequalities of society. So whatever you think about him, he has done good work. Yes, made money from it. But surely right-wingers should be applauding that. It is EXACTLY what their parties MP's do. Albeit from our taxes, rather than from real independent concerns such as Loach.

JaneJudge Wed 28-Jul-21 12:56:21

I'm watching sorry we missed you as a result of this thread! I, Daniel Blake was one of the saddest things I have ever watched

Doodledog Wed 28-Jul-21 13:09:07

I can understand that if there are groups in opposition to Starmer he has to do something, as otherwise he will be accused of not being a strong leader, and of presiding over a split party (as though the Tories speak with one voice, but that's maybe for another thread).

He came in to unite the LP, and in a way that's what he is doing, but he's not doing it in the way that I would prefer. The trouble is that when it comes to voting, much as I would rather be able to vote for a party that more closely matches my views, there is currently nobody who does that, and of the three main parties, Labour is still the most closely aligned.

It's not really about 'sucking it up', for me. It's about keeping out those who would do more harm. Not ideal, perhaps, but I'd rather that as not vote and let the Tories or Lib Dems in.

trisher Wed 28-Jul-21 13:15:16

Doodledog can stamping out discussion really unify anything?
