SIL is an HGV driver, also partner in a food supply company, they are all having a good laugh at this.
After my last post where I told about the HGV licence on a stamped address envelope applying for a HGV drivers job goodness knows what kind of drivers would go over.
Yet according to the radio just now, there are no shortages of fuel in the UK.

No definitely not! I think it's an insult to them. Also it's been made to look as if we're doing them a favour. When will this government ever get anything right? I despair!

Soroptimum Tue 28-Sep-21 12:30:04

NO!

No, I think it is cheeky to ask them and not good for our own.

Shinamae Tue 28-Sep-21 12:46:25

If I couldn’t pay my rent or feed my children and no welfare net to help me, then Yes I would. Pride wouldn’t come into it.

No chance if that when there are so many vacancy’s in countries where employee protection is written in law.

It doesn’t make rational sense to come to the U.K.

I have a question. smile

Where in all the hype does it say they have to be from Europe?

henetha Tue 28-Sep-21 13:14:45

Yes - but only if the money was VERY good.

vegansrock Tue 28-Sep-21 13:15:47

Well we had several thousand from Europe before and since thousands of lorries come every day through Dover it makes sense that Europe would be the first place to look , though if you think we should be trawling around Asia or South America for lorry drivers that might mean a longer wait. However, given the choice between working in Germany where the pay and conditions are way better and you are made to feel welcome I doubt there will be much of a queue.

Smileless2012 Tue 28-Sep-21 13:16:28

Yes for the reasons MerylStreep and henetha have posted.

could it be that they're our nearest neighbour and we're all perfectly familiar with EU HGV drivers being on our roads? And we 'did', until very recently, recognise their qualifications.

Where do you think they might come from (not being snippy, just curious)?

Alegrias1 Tue 28-Sep-21 13:21:40

Well I don't know MaizieD, but it did occur to me that there are other places than Europe. The AETR countries, for instance, where they have to adhere mainly to the same drivers rules as the EU, so are prime candidates to take up the positions.

Off the top of my head.

MaizieD Tue 28-Sep-21 13:25:10

AETR?
