Absolutely dreadful news from Turkey and Syria , it makes me cry. Those poor, poor people. Makes me look at our lives here and think our problems are so trivial.

I have just been in tears after seeing a man covered in dust carrying a newborn baby. A woman had given birth while buried under the rubble and had died. Just truly truly shocking.

Has the U.K. sent help?

Callistemon21 Tue 07-Feb-23 12:10:30

Yes, it is truly dreadful, nanna8

I did start a thread on this as soon as it happened and someone has kindly put on a link if anyone wants to donate.

Yes, Whitewave, search and rescue teams and equipment went out straight away; co-ordinated with the Turkish Government.

I have never forgotten about 20 years ago there were terrible floods in (I think) Mozambique, and people were climbing trees to get away from the water..... and a woman gave birth while holding on to the branches high up in a tree. It affected me deeply and I have thought about it again this morning.

Absolutely!

The last I heard was that 45 countries had offered help but, of course, it does need to be co-ordinated.
The first British contingent flew out the first night.

Just can't even talk about it.

The UK has not sent a lot of help so far, given the scale of the disaster. This, from Sky News just now.

‘The UK is sending 76 search-and-rescue specialists with equipment and dogs, as well as an emergency medical team, to Turkey.

The UK also says it is in contact with the UN about getting support to victims in Syria.’

Hopefully more will be sent, even though it’s going to be difficult to send help to Syria.

Whitewavemark2 Tue 07-Feb-23 12:27:02

Good oh. Only assumed that to be the case but hadn’t read anything.

They have co-ordinated with the Turkish Government and are being directed by them is what I heard.

Anyway, I'll go back to the thread I started.

Why do people always have to criticise the UK Casdon - Germany has sent 50.

I wasn’t comparing the UK to other countries, and I stand by what I said because it was true at that point. If you read my comments on the other thread, the international response given how many people were (are) trapped is my concern, the earthquake zone is huge, and Syria have had much less support than Turkey.

I saw that, the little girl was in hospital, covered in bruises. The whole of her family is dead.
The doctor said they had managed to stabilise her.
