Boris Johnson steps down as MP with immediate effect www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-65863267

I wonder if he’s eloped with Nadine.

Ladyleftfieldlover Fri 09-Jun-23 20:19:10

I hope not! His wife is expecting their third baby imminently. Although as OH just said, that wouldn’t stop him.

M0nica Fri 09-Jun-23 20:20:43

You beat me to it Grannynannywanny, by a minute!

Resigned immediately after seeing House of Commons partygate report.

Not sure whether it has anything to do with Nadine Dorries sudden exit. She had anyway already announced that she would be standing down at the next election

So, 2 bye-elections coming up!

For Boris to go - just like that - I cannot wait to read the report!

Blinko Fri 09-Jun-23 20:21:22

I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s landed some other lucrative deal.

Wheniwasyourage Fri 09-Jun-23 20:23:34

Good, is all I can say without being reported and banned.

Siope Fri 09-Jun-23 20:23:36

And he’s still lying. He has not been forced out by the Privileges Committee. Their recommendation would have gone to a full vote in the Commons.

Grannynannywanny Fri 09-Jun-23 20:27:25

Nadine Dorries has reported that “something significant happened” in the hours before her sudden resignation today.

Riverwalk Fri 09-Jun-23 20:27:30

I wonder if he's planning to stand in Dorries' seat!

That 24,000 majority.

Wheniwasyourage Fri 09-Jun-23 20:27:53

So are he and Ms Dorries trying to force a general election so that he can be back as Leader of the Opposition? Just wondering...

Devorgilla Fri 09-Jun-23 20:28:17

Perhaps he'll go for Nadine's safe seat. I'm sure he has an agenda.

Wheniwasyourage Fri 09-Jun-23 20:29:04

To be fair, it was DH who wondered about the general election first. grin

Just watching the Trump indictment , so missed this, but it occurs to me that the USA rule of law is so much more robust than ours. Johnson should be also facing charges relating to much more, in particular his Italian away job, where it is recorded that he took classified documents with him.

NanaDana Fri 09-Jun-23 20:39:12

So the dead man walking has finally accepted that in political terms, he is a corpse. Or has he? After all, his capacity for self-delusion is second only to Trump's...

Whitewavemark2 Fri 09-Jun-23 20:46:57

Does this mean that he avoids scrutiny by the select committee? If so it is outrageous.

Wyllow3 Fri 09-Jun-23 20:48:22

He’s almost certainly done it for that.

However 👏

Wyllow3 Fri 09-Jun-23 20:51:17

It was announced on R4 any questions and a cheer went up. But I presume the enquiry should still go on?

Whitewavemark2 Fri 09-Jun-23 20:58:20

So - Sunak has bent over backwards to accommodate Johnson’s honours list in the hope of appeasing him.

So what does Johnson do? Resign and almost ensure that the subsequent bye-election will be lost by the Tories.

A b………d to the end.

PS Richard Murphy is reporting that he has flown to Africa? Minus his wife who is imminent in giving birth to his 10th? Child

CvD66 Fri 09-Jun-23 20:59:12

Oh dear! I am so upset. We don’t get the right to see him be sacked by his colleagues when the Privileges committee confirm he lied. What an absolute whimp. As always it’s everyone else’s fault but him. He has trashed UK democracy and his honorific stain on good name will take too long to purge.

grumppa Fri 09-Jun-23 21:05:16

The departure of Johnson and Dorries can only be good for the House of Commons. Come on Rees-Mogg, follow your leader! Liz Truss, take the hint!

Whitewavemark2 Fri 09-Jun-23 21:07:57

Do we still get to see the report? Although I guess there is still the Covid enquiry still to come.

lixy Fri 09-Jun-23 21:08:32

Thank goodness for that.
Perhaps Uxbridge and South Ruislip will get representation now.

Whitewavemark2 Fri 09-Jun-23 21:10:40

Just read his resignation letter.

Very Trumpian isn’t it?

Lumiere Fri 09-Jun-23 21:10:51

His 'honours' list should be rescinded immediately.
This government is a laughing stock and a general election needs to happen and fast.
Surely now enough really is enough.

Siope Fri 09-Jun-23 21:32:45

Anyone know whether the Privileges Committee recommendations would go before the Commons if Johnson was elected in a different seat?

I assume they would, but given a safe enough seat, he could ride that out.

MayBee70 Fri 09-Jun-23 21:52:50

Took the dog for a walk and came back to this! If I take her out again maybe Trump will be gone. If that works maybe I can rid the world of Putin too!
