I received an email supposedly from HMRC about a pending tax repayment for £198.54. It requested that I claim online by giving details of my bank, card number and verification code, Mother's maiden name, driving licence number NI number, full name, date of birth and address.
I am a retired accountant and knew that the tax reference they gave was incorrect and that HMRC would never request this by email.
It even gave the warning that if you're unsure an email is from HMRC go to GOV.UK and search for 'Avoid and report internet scams and phishing'
It certainly gave the appearance of being official and I can see how some people might be taken in. I have reported this to HMRC.

Thanks for the warning. I would never give so much detailed info via email off the cuff as yours appears to have been sent.

We recently were sent an email from our local council saying we were owed overpaid Council Tax. This was in fact true, they wanted our bank detail to pay us. Just above the request was a statement ' we will never ask for your bank details in an email'.

We telephoned them to point out the error of their ways and are awaiting a cheque by post!

Yes I had one of those scam emails from HMRC a couple of months ago. I've also had a lot recently purporting to come from Paypal, which I also reported straight away, then completely deleted from my email account. Never, ever, reply to something like this.

yes, I have had several of these and I have recently had one from Apple warning me my apple itunes account had been compromised. If I had had an apple itunes account I would have found it very convincing. As I don't, I didn't, but I did read it carefully several times.

I had a tax refund email from hm inspector of taxes and reserve....looked official apart from that silly mistake which Gave the game away. Scams, we must always be on on our toes.

I never bother claiming my pending "Tax Refund" from HMRC as I am rather flush with winning the Nigerian national lottery most weeks. Lucky old me. I also have a "Dear relative" residing in Andorra apparently, sadly the said lady is soon not to be with us for much longer, yet her generosity abounds and in exchange for my banking details I will inherit a sizeable amount of monies. In the words of my Andorran benefactor "I am truly blessed".

The daftest one I got was a phone call from 'The Ministry of Justice' who would give me a refund on over paid bank charges.
