Such a loss. sad

MawBroon Wed 14-Mar-18 05:54:57

What a mind - truly an intellectual Colossus.
Given a prognosis of two o three years over 50 years ago, what a survivor he was too sad

Grandma70s Wed 14-Mar-18 06:07:23

Er...
His name was Hawking, not Hawkins. We should get that right.

I have often wondered how he was still alive, but nevertheless I feel shocked by his death. I don’t understand his science, but I believe that he was a great mind. He had a lot of interesting opinions and ideas outside science as well.

Very sad. Given such a prognosis in 1963 he amazingly had more than a good innings. My late DH was in the same year as Stephen at St. Albans School.

He really has proved the theory of mind over matter. I'd grown to believe he would live forever. Sad.

Amazing man RIP

OldMeg Wed 14-Mar-18 07:29:47

Yes, I had somehow thought he was immortal. RIP.

OldMeg Wed 14-Mar-18 07:32:16

I remember he once said 'It would not be much of a universe if it wasn't home to the people you love.'

"Look up at the stars and not down at your feet" - Professor Stephen Hawking

Truly an amazing man. I too almost thought of him as immortal!

judypark Wed 14-Mar-18 08:39:10

He also had a great sense of humour. When asked what he thought was the biggest mystery of the universe was he replied --- Women.

Luckygirl Wed 14-Mar-18 08:49:09

Sad news - but my goodness he outlived all expectations.

Gerispringer Wed 14-Mar-18 08:53:36

My DS met him a few times as he studied at Gonville and Caius College Cambridge where Dr Hawking had a ground floor room and there were loads of ramps etc in the college built especially for him. DS was really star struck whenever he saw him. Why didn't he get a knighthood btw?

Teetime Wed 14-Mar-18 08:57:04

I saw him in John Lewis in Cambridge and found myself quite star struck by the sighting. Amazing Man. RIP.

Pittcity Wed 14-Mar-18 08:57:38

He was offered a knighthood in the 90s but turned it down because of the way the government funded science.

I too thought he would live forever. He will be sorely missed.

Pittcity

A wonderful saying.
His was a life truly lived, much of it for the benefit of others. An indomitable spirit which will live on in the legacy of knowledge he unearthed and shared with the world.
RIP Stephen Hawking.

Blinko Wed 14-Mar-18 10:31:50

A remarkable man in so very many ways. Respect, and may he RIP.

Lindylo Wed 14-Mar-18 10:40:18

Amazing scientist who made it cool.
Another quote from him 'remember to look up at the stars and not down at your feet'4
Very apt

Nonnie Wed 14-Mar-18 10:44:19

I will be listening to him on Thursday in The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy on R4 at 1830. "A brain the size of a planet" comes to mind for those of you who know.

Sheilasue Wed 14-Mar-18 10:46:36

Amazing man to have lived so long. Have to say that because a lot of people with that illness don’t normally live that long. Had a friend who’s husband had the same illness he died within five years.
