Countries are not and never have been under any obligation to join the Commonwealth, and can leave at any time they wish, the U.S didn't join and neither did Burma. countries of the Middle East declined membership, As this is, for some, an old fashioned out of date anachronism, is it not strange that countries who were not British colonys have asked if they can join? Rwanda joined in 2009 Mozambique in 1995. The RF have done enormous good in the Commonwealth, the Queen is loved and respected, Prince Charles accepted unanimously as the next head. Come to Prince William then perhaps by mutual consent, things may well be different, but it will be evolution not revolution. Again how sad that Prince Harry and Meghan were unable to be part of this enormously important institution, bearing in mind their humanitarian beliefs and ethos, which I would have outweighed megga bucks any day.

I could take him no bother! I quite fancy getting all dressed up and waving a bit. Might get a bit boring watching endless folk type dancing and trying to look interested. I'm good at inspecting people though so could walk up and down reviewing people etc

I like the concept of the Commonwealth. I don't think it's an old fashioned out of date anachronism. Interestingly, if you go to their website there's a lot about their secretary general but not very much about the Head of the Commonwealth. So the jobs could be yours if you want it Aveline, maybe Charles won't be bothered.

Thank you Bluebellewould and Annie (yesterday) and Namsnanny. I just feel that this saga has been such a waste of what might have been and so sad.

But people have different views jabberwok they may not see it as a waste of what might have been at all. I certainly wouldnt see it as a waste if I was in their shoes I would be relieved.

That's as may be Galaxy and no one has an issue with anyone deciding that something is not your cuppa and deciding on a different more private peaceful life, (their words) but trashing your family and all the other things previously mentioned in 'worldwide' publicity in order to make these megga bucks is pretty dreadful by any one's standards.

Scotland going independent would not mean we become a republic. She's our Queen too you know.

Would we join the Commonwealth? Hope so.

Unless there was a question about that on the ballot paper and the majority was not in favour.

If and when we get another referendum the question will be independence, yes or no.

Later on, we might join the Commonwealth. I wonder how countries join? Do you need a referendum? Its not a political union so probably not. Anyway, that'll be fun to find out.
