I read with interest the post whereby the person didn't like the choice of names for their new grandchild. My daughter is expecting a girl and chose a lovely name but made the mistake and telling someone who put a very negative spin on it and so she's not going to use it. Just out of interest, what Scottish girls names would you suggest - traditional or modern!

I have always thought Fiona is a lovely name. My daughters's best friend is called Shona - I like that as well.

Shona is lovely. also Isla.

I lived opposite to a girl called Ailsa, I thought it was a lovely name.
I went to school with a Morag, she was fun.

Among my Scottish ancestors I have discovered Kirsty,Christy and Lexi (which I guess is short for Alexandrina).Less attractive is Williamina (which somehow got changed to Wilhelmina)

Lovely names already suggested, how about Rowan?

What a shame that your daughter has been put off her choice for the baby's name.
I haven't any suggestions, except that I think Shona is a pretty name.

I love the name Katrine. It’s more unusual than Katrina.

I know an Ailsa and and an Alba. Iona is also popular, as is Flora.

My best friend at a primary school I attended was Elspeth Ann and a lovely classmate at secondary was Morag. I know a cute little girl call Sheila.

Having been a Primary school teacher for many years, some names are forever linked with particular children. So some names are completely out .Need I say more ?

Thank you for the lovely suggestions. The one she originally wanted isn't there though! We already have a Rowan and an Isla in the family but I will pass on the others to her to see if she likes them. It's a shame she ever mentioned the original name to anyone. Whatever she's called, can't wait to meet her. As an aside my daughter was named at birth and then changed two weeks later!

I went to school with a Fiona and a Sheena who were both lovely people. My aunties all seemed to be called Isobel, Ishbell, Isa etc.

There were a fair number of Kathleens too and Myras.

I know a Scottish Kirsteen which I really like.

Probably not a proper "Scottish" name, but Celtic, Merryn. (I believe it can also be spelled Merrin, but not entirely sure(

Grandma70s Mon 26-Oct-20 15:03:46

The Scots in my family are Fiona, Janet, Helen and then there was Marie-Isabelle, my mother-in-law, who was half Scottish and half French.

Kathleen is Irish, surely?

made the mistake of telling someone

Another reason to keep details to yourself.
Let others wait until baby is born to disclose names.
