Why is this word "uptick" suddenly used all the time instead of "increase"?

tanith Sat 04-Jul-20 18:48:57

Never seen or even heard it used.

Oopsminty Sat 04-Jul-20 18:52:22

I have noticed this as well

Apparently As nouns the difference between increase and uptick is that increase is an amount by which a quantity is increased while uptick is a small change upwards or increase in something that has been steady or declining.

I hate this word. Even heard it used by a journalist in another country, whose native language is not English.

It is an on trend word. There are a few at the mo!

Chewbacca Sat 04-Jul-20 19:57:14

Yup! I've seen it used more and more frequently. What's wrong with "increase"?

Chewbacca Sat 04-Jul-20 19:58:14

And will we soon be subjected to "downtick" instead of "decrease"?

To me, it seems that it describes rather well what a graph would look like if it did what Oopsminty says.

I've never heard it though.

Much loved in the Downing Street Covid-19 press conferences. Probably American.

Uptick is up there with Pushback.
