Pedants' corner

Furniture item with 'draws' - should be 'drawers'!

My first visit to Pedants' corner but this has been irritating me for some time. It seems that whenever someone offers this item on a local sales site (lots of them on Facebook) or for rehoming on Freecycle the drawers are usually referred to as 'draws'. I can't help it - it causes me to shout at the laptop, which does no good, of course!

My ‘favourite’ was a ‘chez lounge’. ?

Don't forget a 'Christmas Reef'

And a house described as being in a “coldie sack”. Chilly? ?

“Draws” seems to be the accepted way of saying drawers in the North East. Certainly one of the things I’ve noticed since moving here 16yrs ago.

As in “Winter draws on” ? ??

Called drawers 'draws' must indicate either a lack of hearing or lack of basic education.

None of them bother me.

Drives me mad too I really have to tie my wrists to not correct them on marketplace

I've lived all over England, and can't think of anywhere that pronounces 'drawers' as anything but 'draws'.
However 'withdrawal' can be pronounced as spelt or as 'withdrawl' depending on geography.

That is the first I realised I lived in a coldie sack. It is cold at present.

Freecycle shows draws instead of drawers. I look on offer to discover somebody is actually asking for eg a leaf blower so does not know the difference between wanted and offer.

On GN I often see i'll as unwell. Argh!

Aveline
I think Richard Feynman might have something to say about that assumption.

Well, I live in a sort after village. Apparently

I once looked at an eBay item which was advertised as a 'shawl with sequence'.

Had to think about that…

I once saw an advert for a secretarty.

Juliet maybe that wasn’t a typo!

I’m going to send an email to our local Planning Dept. I am fed up with reading that Planning Permission is sort.

On every single application arghhhh

My iPad changes ill to I’ll automatically

I have to go back and alter it.

Aveline Mon 26-Sep-22 07:43:10

MerylStreep there is a clear auditory and orthographic difference between drawer and draw. Actually there's a grammatical and a semantic one too.

NotSpaghetti Mon 26-Sep-22 07:44:54

Mine too Oops.
...and it doesn't seem to learn.

Ah well, that’s England!
They also often seem to be capable of confusing those large sea mammals and the Principality, which can be misleading to those of us who know the difference between wh and w grin

People who say 'this is the worse thing' .Worse than what?

Oldnproud Mon 26-Sep-22 09:20:18

I blame people who pronounce drawing as drawring, and draw as drore, for the mutation of drawers into draws / drores. They are responsible for widespread confusion among the population. grin
