She arrived late Feb, after a truly difficult start in life. She was terrified, and especially scared of men. But she has come on leaps and bounds. Owns the garden, and spends most of her time there. So hot recently that she has dug out 'nests' under hazelnut trees at bottom of the garden- to keep cool.

She has a tracker on her collar- but no longer a harness and mostly off the lead as soon as we get to the woods- and happily trots with us, and comes when called. She is such a joy. Spent a couple of nights in our lovely local kennels- with large fenced garden and all dogs sleep on their own bed inside large room inside house, and was fine. Will go there for 3 nights next week- and we have a lovely dog sitter who will come and stay here when we go to Portugal early autumn- coming to get to know her next week.

I have been sleeping much better, feel fitter than I have for a long time, and lost 10 kg (almost 1 and 1/2 stone) win, win for all of us.

That is wonderful. I follow Rory Cellan Jones and his rescue dog Sophie. It sounds like your little princess is settling in

That's lovely, Fleurpepper!

Do you have a photo?

Where I live now. all dogs have to be registered with local and National authorities, chipped, vaccinated, and some breeds are not allowed. We have to pay a significant sum per year to keep a dog- to run services linked to dog ownership.

That means that refuges mainly have amstaffs, and the like, or dogs that have shown agression in the past, and so on. If I lived in the UK, I would have, as we did in the past, adopt from local refuge or RSPCA.

This is lovely to read. Sounds as if she is settling in well. I hope you have many happy years together.

I think you got your Princesse Yata just after we rescued our bonnie Prince Fraser from the RSPCA cattery. Two success stories, especially as our moggy came with an appalling behavioural report, having bitten the vet and flown at most of the cattery helpers!
Always a joy and an honour to give an animal a good home. Even though they rule the roost.

The joy of rescues. Mine spent two weeks under our bed only coming out for toileting. I sat on the bedroom floor and talked to him for hours, After two months he crept up and laid his head on my knee - so difficult not to sweep him up in my arms for a cuddle! Now, after 4 years he still has days when he is a bit jumpy and has never had a proper walk (100 yards down the road and he turns round), but he is so loving now and thinks all cuddles are his and shoulders the other two dogs out the way. Very much part of the family now and so pleased we took him on.

Thats wonderful to hear. We have had our rescue 5 years and even now she makes progress. She is also such a joy, very funny and loving. She had never been walked or seen a vet and didn't want to leave the house now at 10.30 every morning she wants her walk. We had our last rescue 16 years and also after an initial period of what seemed to be mo improvement she became a wonderful dog. Despite the initial hard work we have never regretted having either of them.

That's lovely, Fleurpepper!

Sorry didn't see this previously. Yes, lots and lots of photos, but I never share any on GN. She is typical of North Africa- like a small alsatian, tan, with floppy ears, and Cleopatra painted eyes, and long long elegant paws.

Wonderful walks every day in the woods, with her off lead. I feel now I can totally trust her and that she can go off track and always return. Often go walking with my lovely neighbour and her female Jack Russel. We are off to Portugal next week, and we have a dog sitter coming to stay. She came for a couple of days to meet us all, and I feel she will do a good job, but it will be hard to leave her for 10 days (Porto and Lisbon).

BTW if any of you great dog lovers would fancy coming to dog sit, and then be shown around this lovely area- the Swiss/French Jura mountains- make yourself known. With or without your own dog- as long as it is dog and of course CAT friendly too.

She sounds as though she is really thriving. My rescue was a naughty girl last night. I was eating my cottage pie whilst watching the tv and needed a wee. Came back to find her licking her lips looking extremely guilty as she had eaten the remaining cottage pie. In the 5 years we have had her she has never done this. Oh well a bit of extra training required. She brought me 2 of her toys in exchangegrin.x

Ooo yes please! Dogs, cats, mountains, cheeses .... what's not to like? Our UK town is twinned with somewhere near Neuchârel.

I know that feeling of relief when off lead and recall works.
