Jaxjacky Fri 20-May-22 18:25:02

He/she chose the wrong person there then.

Blossoming Fri 20-May-22 18:30:52

Do you think they meant Gransnet when they mentioned grownup websites?

MawtheMerrier Fri 20-May-22 18:44:35

????????????????????????

I had a similar email, worded differently but with much the same message. My first thought was "Go ahead and send any videos to my contacts because they won't be of me since my laptop camera has a cover over it."

What I actually did was to delete it - and the time limit for paying in bitcoin has passed with no further contact. Of course, I should have reported it.

Erotic loom knitting eh? Perhaps there.s a market for it. grin He's probably on to a good thing. DH used to repair computers for blokes at work. He said all the viruses he removed had come from porn sites they'd been accessing. He was always careful to avoid porn because of the risk.

About 20 years ago the police took DH's computer because they thought he'd been on a child porn site. I told the DI who took it that they would only find pictures of cats and Italy. He told me that he had searched hundreds and only ever found two that had no porn. When he brought it back (after four months!) he said "OK you were right, cats and Italy".

I had a similar email a while back. But as soon as I read the bit which said "I've been enjoying your filthy videos" then I knew it was a scam. I don't have, and never have had, any filthy videos! So I deleted it and the threats came to nothing.
What horrible people aren't they.

GrandmaSeaDragon Fri 20-May-22 23:42:05

I had a similar, but more explicit, email a couple of weeks ago. I knew none of it was true and DH said there are thousands of messages like this on the internet, so little point in reporting it. Just deleted it. I also thought what horrible sad individuals the senders are.

Never open these emails delete straight away!!

nanna8 Sat 21-May-22 07:28:08

It’s a funny one, someone is having a lend of you probably someone you know!

Blossoming Sat 21-May-22 13:32:17

I never lend my tech to anyone nanna8 and it’s definitely not from anybody I know grin.

Lists of email addresses are bought and sold all the time. Every time you subscribe to something you’re on a list somewhere and potentially a target for spammers. I have a few email addresses that I use for various subscriptions. All my email addresses have filters and rules so anything suspect goes to a spam folder or straight to trash. None of my email addresses generate an automatic confirmation. I’ve worked in IT for long enough to know how to protect my devices.

lemsip Sat 21-May-22 15:07:04

I'm surprised you opened the email.

biglouis Tue 31-May-22 00:11:07

I had that a couple of years ago. Claimed he had photos of me wa***ing over adult sites he was going to distribute to all my address list including my employer (im self employed).

I dont have a camera on my desktop so he must have got the photos by psychic means.

The most dodgy site I visit is BBC News.

Do these people think we are stupid???

BlueBelle Tue 31-May-22 03:51:39

Never open a dodgy email

Juliet27 Tue 31-May-22 06:02:26

If he could target the right people to tell them that he could broadcast their ‘personal pleased face’ it might deter some of the w***ers from using ‘grown up’ sites. Very amusing scam.

We now sort of accept these scammers, hackers, phishers, etc, as an inevitable everyday nuisance.

But when you think about it, they are just as criminal as a burglar who breaks into your home and steals your property - the only difference is that they can't physically beat you up.

I wonder if there will ever be the technology to root out these individuals? I'd like to see them imprisoned... a good long stretch behind bars - with no access to any kind of technology - might give them time to reflect.

The more we are compelled to rely on IT etc, the more damaging they are. Banks want us to do our banking online, yet have been slow to respond to the various scams that even educated and 'clever' people can sometimes fall victim to.

What I mean is, I hope eventually that these low-life (where have I heard that phrase before hmm are treated less as a 'nuisance' and more as the dangerous criminals that they are.
