We all know the blissful feeling of having a spare hour or two of precious me-time to do the things that make us feel good. While some might feel productive and get a few tasks done around the house, others may prefer to cook up a storm in the kitchen, have a coffee and a cake with friends or just do nothing in peace and quiet. With this in mind, McCarthy and Stone would like to know how you like to spend your spare time.

Here’s what McCarthy & Stone have to say: “At McCarthy & Stone we offer much more than bricks and mortar, we offer a lifestyle, somewhere you can feel safe and secure, make friends and socialise, enjoy the outdoors and have easy access to local amenities like shops, pubs and restaurants. From rural retreats and seaside living, to vibrant city centres and tranquil suburbs, our developments offer something for every taste.

With over 40 years’ experience of building tight-knit retirement communities, you can be confident that we can help find the perfect environment for you. Right now we’re offering to pay up to 100% of your service charge for up to 8 years* or give you 2 months’ rent free* on selected properties, don’t miss out this is a strictly time limited offer.”

*Terms and conditions apply

So, we are asking you: How do you love using your spare time? Do you prefer to keep an active mind and body, or prefer to indulge in leisurely activities to relax? Perhaps you love to go out in nature or maybe you prefer to wander around the high street and visit your favourite shops and restaurants nearby? Is there plenty of choice of things to do to occupy your spare time where you live? How important is it to you to be near to family and friends, and how do you share your spare time with them?

Whatever you do to keep yourself busy when you’ve got a spare hour or two, share on the thread below and you’ll be entered into a prize draw where one lucky Gransnetter will win a £100 voucher for a store of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck!

I prefer spending my free time walking my dog, We enjoy walking through the local woods or along the canal banks. It's so great to be out in the open air enjoying the countryside.

Reading is also a great pleasure of mine to read an absorbing thriller, while enjoying a glass of wine.

Read, quilt, watch television, spend time with friends. Always something to do.

I like to indulge myself with something enjoyable such as patchwork quilting or dressmaking - it's great to make something for oneself or others. Sometimes I bake something such as cookies or a cake - it's constructive and has an end-product.
Also, just for the sake of it, feet up with a good book or a crossword puzzle - there's no such thing as boredom.

Since Covid what I do in my spare time has been limited. Normally I go to the theatre, cinema, pubs, restaurants concerts and festivals. I also love to travel and visiting new countries. Now I enjoy gardening, reading, puzzles of any kind, board games, tapestry and walking along the river or canal banks. I also like cooking and experimenting with new dishes. I also play computer games and watch the TV.

Reading, jigsaws and cooking. All free time now I am retired and I love every minute of it!

My favourite "spare" (I prefer to think of it as "free" time smile ) activities include:

Going for a walk, I have a favourite scenic circular route.
Doing embroidery or other sewing.
Knitting.
Reading.
Writing.

Walking briskly in the ‘safe’ outdoors while listening to podcasts. I’d also like to know what others do while they’re listening to something.

Tergly Fri 04-Sep-20 20:15:46

I like gardening if I am feeling energetic, otherwise feet up surfing the net or watching tele

I love embroidery and textile art. Also I adore my courtyard garden and love to walk along our local river.

A daily walk weather providing, or a potter about in the garden is always good. But most of all I love my art, whether it's painting in oils, or just using charcoal and pencils. When I'm engrossed in my art my mind is on a different level and I can forget all the troubles in the world.

I enjoy reading, knitting and crochet.
I also spend a lot of time gardening but not because I like it, but because I like the garden to look good.
At the moment Im also keeping a Coronavirus diary. It’ll be interesting to read it in future years.

Reading, walking. National Trust visits pre Covid. I'm not too keen on exercising apart from walking but with the money I've saved during Lockdown, I've invested in a treadmill, so have some time on that each day.

I enjoy reading and listening to talking books. "Virtual" coffee mornings are fun. I walk and do yoga. Making cushions and patchwork come into the mix as well.

In my spare time I enjoy entering competitions, I am also enjoying doing Diamond Painting / Diamond Crosstitch, I started doing them during the lockdown and I am finding them very relaxing

At least 30 minutes exercise a day first thing and plenty of walking. Spending time with the family and meeting up with friends. Meals out, quizzing, competitions, reading, doing jigsaws or knitting while watching TV, sewing. And spending far too much time on the internet. blush In better times going to the theatre and cinema, to pub quizzes and arts festivals, visiting new places, and dancing.

I could quite happily spend most of the day curled up with a good book. I also love being outside walking in the beautiful parks near our home, and manage to find time to do some exercises every day too to keep supple and fit. I'd like to find time to brush up my Italian and learn Spanish .... they are on my 'to do' list!

AlysonH Sun 06-Sep-20 09:47:15

Nothing like a cup of tea and a good book if there's only a short time. Otherwise it's outdoors exploring somewhere new and walking ...

littleowl Sun 06-Sep-20 09:47:16

I love photography and it gets me out most days. I get lost in it and the time just evaporates.
I also enjoy knitting, reading and gardening.

curlytops Sun 06-Sep-20 09:47:46

Spending as much time as possible in the outdoors either walking or going out on my newly acquired bike.

burwellmum Sun 06-Sep-20 09:51:27

Don't have much free time at the moment and I tend to sink down to read a paper or watch a bit of tv if I do, exhausted.

noahsark Sun 06-Sep-20 09:52:02

I like entering competitions, baking cakes, gardening, & pre covid19 just wandering around the shops checking out all the new styles

janipans Sun 06-Sep-20 09:53:04

I love losing myself in a jigsaw puzzle - trouble is that once started I can't leave it alone so nothing else gets done!
