There are only a certain few that don't smell like burnt rubber or cat's pee on me! I'm fine with Rive Gauche or Anais Anais -even Avon Timeless is really good on me, but any of the newer ones just do nothing for me at all.

I always wear Angel by Thierry Muggler.sunshine

absentgrana Sat 14-Jul-12 16:57:25

A year after this thread started and years after I started wearing it, Chanel No 5 remains my favourite, although I sometimes wear Elizabeth Arden Green Tea during the day when nothing special is happening and some Bulgari scent whose name I have forgotten.

Have I been scrolling and scanning too quickly or am I the only Granny amongst us who loves 'Femme' by Rochas? Its been my absolute favourite for 40 odd years. I am occasionally unfaithful to it (so that I can enjoy rediscovering it!) and then I like to use Mitsouko by Guerlain or, in the summer, 'Romance' by Ralph Lauren. Will somebody please buy some Femme or they will discontinue it! I hate Samsara (smells like furniture polish) and Poison. In fact, I really only like vintage perfumes - the modern ones tend to give me a headache.

specki yes, 'Femme' is gorgeous perfume, and Poison does what it says on the label - foul smell!

My all-time favourite was 'Sortilege' by LeGalion. Apparently, the formula has been bought by an American company and they may be selling it again.

I used to use femme for years, they changed the formula and after that! No!
Poisin! Yuk!

I also like any of the purfumes made by Armando Bassi, but I can only find it in airports once or twice I have seen it in TK Max,it is delightful and very light for day time use.

J,'adore by Dior is mine.

annemac101 Sun 15-Jul-12 16:31:39

I wear Poem or j'adore or channel no 5 . Thinking back to my young days in the seventies it was Tramp or Cachet, goodness what memories they would bring back I'd love to smell them again.

jeni Sun 15-Jul-12 16:36:33

Essential rose is nice as is Versace Versace

glammanana Sun 15-Jul-12 16:41:16

jeni I am quite fond of most floral scents for daytime and would not pull a face if any where bought for me as presents, but my most favourite which I always have is Oscar de la Renta I've used it for years it was also my mums favourite along with No 5.

jeni Sun 15-Jul-12 17:13:31

I prefer coco to no5

Grandmanorm Mon 16-Jul-12 14:13:20

Absentgrana, I am with you, Chanel 5. I was given it for my honeymoon 48 years ago and have used it ever since.
When I visit grandchildren in USA they always tell me I smell of Scotland!

Grandmanorm Mon 16-Jul-12 14:15:53

I once gave a friend a lift on a long journey she wore Poison and the smell stayed in the car for weeks, regardless of how much we cleaned it. It was indeed Poison!

I still love Miss Dior, given to me by my first boyfriend in 1966! Other favourite is Balmain Jolie Madame which I had when my son was born so it brings back happy memories. I also loved Ecusson by Jean d'Albret but I don't think you can get it now.

Maries Mon 13-Aug-12 09:53:21

Many memories here.

Having found most of the modern perfumes do not suit me I have been on ebay getting some old favourites.

I now have ( all usable and mostly full bottles which cost less than a tenner and often under a fiver):

a) Max Factor Exuberance. I loved this as a teenager. I love it again.

b) Soir de Paris - the original. There is a modern version you can buy but it doesnt quite smell the same. I have a whole bath set of Soir de Paris intact from the 1960's. It still smells lovely. Its gracing my bedroom drawers.

c) O de Lancome. I loved this throughout my twenties and was still using it in 2000 . However they firstly changed it and then seem to have discontinued it - at least in the UK. I have managed to get it overseas.
But now I have a full bottle of the old original. Bliss.

d) Avon discontinueds - Somewhere ( now that cost a bit more for some reason, its a popular on ebay) and Topaz.

I still use Tweed from time to time but I think that has changed too.

I have also been looking for Goya No 5 if anyone recalls that - and Revlon. No success in getting those. Been outbid.

I wish they would bring some of these old ones back.

Am I imagining or was there once a Courant ( sp?) by Elizabeth Arden in the 1970's? I recall having had this given me by someone and it was very nice but I cannot find any mention of it anywhere.

I am stocking up and depleting what stocks of these are left as I use them. Perfume was made to be used, not looked at or collected is my motto.

Going even further back does anyone remember Californian poppy sold by woolworths and often purchased as a gift (after much saving up) for my mum.smile

Maries Mon 13-Aug-12 11:10:08

You can still get Californian Poppy in the "modern version" like Soir de Paris.

I dont know what its like as I never knew the original. I can recall it but never bought it.

My mum loved "June" as did both my gran and aunt. Now there is one to conjure with on ebay. Tried to get it. £50 a bottle or more. Small bottle too.

whitewave Mon 13-Aug-12 13:47:33

I ahve used Miss Dior since a teenager but they seem to have muddled the packaging lately and the last bottle in a Miss Dior package was in fact Miss Dior Cherie which I am not keen on but using it up as it was a present.

greenmossgiel Mon 13-Aug-12 14:00:57

Maries - yes, I remember Courant! I used to love Goya's Black Rose as well as their No 5. Also Yardley's Freesia - it was really lovely! I found a little bottle of Max Factor's Hypnotique in amongst my late mother-in-law's things, and it's been lying in a box for years. I've opened it and worn it, and it's still lovely! I think I'll have a wee look on ebay too......smile

Ariadne Mon 13-Aug-12 16:50:12

Goya did one called"Remember" which I loved when I was about 14! And Yardley's "Chique" (? Sp) was nice too.

I am finishing a Jo Malone at the moment - can't remember what it's called and it's upstairs...like her perfumes a lot.

kiku was my absolute favourite wish it was still available

Ella46 Wed 22-Aug-12 23:02:22

Maries I just bought a bottle of O de Lancome original, and it is so fresh and just as I remember it. They still sell it in the stores. smile
