Did anyone else watch this last night?

I’ve always thought he was a revolting individual and could never understand why, despite his drink/drug related behaviour, his career was not just allowed but encouraged to advance. I’m not the least bit surprised that accusations of rape are now gathering force.

But… Is this a case of trial by media? There has been no police investigation as yet.

What are your thoughts?

henetha Sun 17-Sep-23 10:04:33

My first thought is to be careful what we say. There are too many trials by media these days. Time will discover the truth, hopefully.

I dislike the man and his humour. I am not surprised at the accusations. The police are looking into it and I’m sure we will soon hear from them.

Never have found anything to like about him and am dismayed that he will now be on screen/radio a lot over the next few weeks.

I would prefer that people were 'innocent until proven guilty ' in all cases.

Shelflife Sun 17-Sep-23 10:06:47

Never liked him but time will tell, innocent till proven guilty!

MrsThatcher Sun 17-Sep-23 10:07:20

I agree. He is revolting and not in the least bit funny. Let’s wait and see how this unfolds.

timetogo2016 Sun 17-Sep-23 10:15:46

I think he is over rated and not a bit funny.
As for the accusations, why do these women leave it so long to tell all,IF it`s even true.

Galaxy Sun 17-Sep-23 10:19:36

Did you watch it. They spoke to various people years ago.

Will this TV show prejudice any potential court case?

Sparklefizz Sun 17-Sep-23 10:21:43

All I can say is that I'm not the slightest bit surprised

Beckett Sun 17-Sep-23 10:23:51

I agree with those who are saying he is unfunny and over rated. I think we should wait until the police have finished their investigation before making any judgements.

As for the women leaving it so long - one of the accusations against him is his controlling behaviour, also I believe at least one woman tried to report him to his employer and/or agent and was told "that's just Russell". Just as I don't think we should rush to judgement on him, we should also not rush to judgement about his accusers

Galaxy Sun 17-Sep-23 10:28:53

He has always been a deeply deeply sexist man, clothing it in progressive nonsense, however even knowing this I was astounded at the behaviour that was allowed to go unchecked and was frequently rewarded. His behaviour towards the newsreader live on air was foul. She complained and they told brand who then mocked the complaint live on air.

FenellaFootstrap Sun 17-Sep-23 10:31:54

One particular thing that turned my stomach was his offering to take a young woman along with him to visit Jimmy Savile. That says it all for me.

GrannyGravy13 Sun 17-Sep-23 10:32:36

It was an uncomfortable watch, not sure a 90 minute documentary was the correct way to go.

I hope it doesn’t prejudice any future court case/s

Grammaretto Sun 17-Sep-23 10:32:56

I don't think I know who he is. I had to look him up when the salacious accusations were all over the BBC last night and this morning.

Have they really no more important news?

Galaxy Sun 17-Sep-23 10:34:35

Some women did try to challenge his behaviour live on air, they basically got nowhere, I briefly saw the Questine Time clip, I think it was Caroline Lucas from the Green Party who challenged him really well.

LauraNorderr Sun 17-Sep-23 10:34:41

I agree with those who find him unfunny and revolting.
He’s had a huge influence on younger people in the past and should have been binned for his disgusting behaviour long ago.
I remember him on Question Time encouraging youngsters not to vote. He was put firmly in his place by a young man telling him that if we want change then we have to vote.
Now he hides behind his ‘wellness’ blogs. I don’t believe a word. I see him as a perverse and dangerous character and am not surprised by the allegations being made against him.

LauraNorderr Sun 17-Sep-23 10:35:14

Crossed posts Galaxy

Hetty58 Sun 17-Sep-23 10:35:51

I always thought he was sleazy - always switched channel - so no surprise. Still, why are these really weird characters on our screens so often? What's the attraction, do you think? Maybe we haven't advanced very much since the public audiences of Bedlam?

Galaxy Sun 17-Sep-23 10:37:37

At least your post spelled Question Time correctly Laura. 🤦‍♀️

This.

Would you have said the same about Jimmy Savile?

You don't think the allegations are serious or anything to worry about then, Grammaretto?

😲

GrannyGravy13 Sun 17-Sep-23 11:02:51

I have given this more thought, and I do not think that allegations of rape, sexual assault and coercive behaviour should be the subject of a TV documentary.

Surely if Dispatches has/had enough evidence they should have taken it to the police as opposed to broadcasting it as prime time Saturday night entertainment

I am not a fan of Russell Brand, but in the U.K. you are innocent until proved guilty…

Grammaretto Sun 17-Sep-23 11:04:19

Not if they are just that, allegations. No if someone tore me down in public without a trial, it wouldn't be fair .
Perhaps inappropriate news would be a better word.
There are wars, earthquakes, floods and melting glaciers or haven't you noticed these?
