Have a go at this bugger then.

I CAUGHT this morning morning’s minion, king-
dom of daylight’s dauphin, dapple-dawn-drawn Falcon, in his riding
Of the rolling level underneath him steady air, and striding
High there, how he rung upon the rein of a wimpling wing
In his ecstasy! then off, off forth on swing, 5
As a skate’s heel sweeps smooth on a bow-bend: the hurl and gliding
Rebuffed the big wind. My heart in hiding
Stirred for a bird, —the achieve of; the mastery of the thing!

Brute beauty and valour and act, oh, air, pride, plume, here
Buckle! AND the fire that breaks from thee then, a billion 10
Times told lovelier, more dangerous, O my chevalier!

No wonder of it: shéer plód makes plough down sillion
Shine, and blue-bleak embers, ah my dear,
Fall, gall themselves, and gash gold-vermillion.

Gerard Manley Hopkins

I'll leave you to it. Enjoy. smile roastchicken

Well, at least no one can blame you for derailing the thread this time, jingl...hmm

jinglbellsfrocks Fri 03-Apr-15 19:01:49

It's no good saying "favourite poem" and "shivers down my spine". hmm You've got to analyse it. In detail. Starting at the beginning. [NShSh]

jinglbellsfrocks Fri 03-Apr-15 19:02:20

The picture didn't tell me much. hmm

loopylou Fri 03-Apr-15 19:11:13

Have you read 'H for Hawk', this poem would sit beautifully alongside that story.

Realising it's addressed to Mishap.........sorry for derailing jingl tbublush

I thought you could say what you liked about poetry once you'd left school.
You do not have to analyse any more.

Juliette Fri 03-Apr-15 19:14:28

Zzzzzzzzzzzz.
Analyse it? I don't even understand it Jing
I shouldn't really be on Gransnet should I?
blush

durhamjen Fri 03-Apr-15 19:21:59

Try reading it out aloud, Juliette. It sounds much better then. Hopkins invented the form, I think, called sprung rhythm.

It's called The Windhover, which is a kestrel.

loopylou Fri 03-Apr-15 19:23:57

tbugrin I'm with you durhamjen & Juliette.... Nightmare-inducing memories of analysing Chaucer's 'The Wife of Bath'.....didn't understand that either so little hope nearly 45 years later me thinks!

jinglbellsfrocks Fri 03-Apr-15 19:27:58

Juliette Fri 03-Apr-15 19:32:22

Thanks durhamjen
Do I have to read it in a proper RP voice, or will a West Midlands accent suffice?

absent Fri 03-Apr-15 19:32:39

This bugger – is that what you think of this poem?

jinglbellsfrocks Fri 03-Apr-15 19:33:32
