Hugo and his nan grow closer when she gets two goats which he helps to look after. In the process, he discovers how the past has shaped Nan’s life. Hugo has to face different family reactions to changes in Nan and can find some hard to understand. His other grandmother doesn’t appear so family-orientated. She can be odd and seems more interested in wildlife. Nevertheless, the grandmothers get on well – when they’re allowed to meet – and Hugo learns that the two women share a sense of fun and a get-on-with-life outlook.
