to hope that bad language would be considered offensive?

Does anyone feel sad that old fashioned manners...please...thankyou...excuse me - are no longer "hip". I loathe the frequent use of foul language, especially on comedy shows.

I will wait to see with interest how Gransnet develops in this regard, given that bad language is an accepted part of Mumsnet. I'm not saying that's right, but it's how it is. It's driven by its posters, I suppose (plus the fact that it's not a moderated site), so it will be interesting to see how this works on this site.

I'm certainly with you on good manners - can't bear it when people don't say please or thank you.

I'm waiting with anticipation to see what breed of trolls gransnet will attract grin

I didn't realise that bad language is an accepted part of mumsnet - I sincerely hope the mums don't use bad language within earshot of their children. Does that make me sound an old fuddy duddy?

jangly Thu 05-May-11 18:30:31

So, do you all never use the odd swear word in real life? I know I do and I would have thought it would be ok on a grownup forum. ( so long as the language isn't too foul!) [grin)

After all, the children are not likely to be looking over our shoulders as is possible on mumsnet.

jangly Thu 05-May-11 18:31:11

I mean grin (!)

RedRidingHood Thu 05-May-11 18:53:27

Yes, I really hope the tone will be a little more civilised on here.

GrannyJ Thu 05-May-11 20:39:16

I agree completely, The world would be a much better place with a few more morals, manners and discipline.
OMG, I sound soooo old!! (I am really still very young in my mind, even if my body doesn't agree)

I have five (now adult) children and none of them have EVER heard me swear - because I just don't do it. (Actually I'm saving it up for when I think I need some real shock tactics.smile) Youngest daughter once heard me say 'damn' after dropping a stack of files and still refers to her trauma.

crazynanna Fri 06-May-11 09:34:53

usualsuspect I too like swearing....I am going to use this site as Rehab grin

Helmar Fri 06-May-11 11:05:05

I totally agree there is no need for swearing - I manage to make my feelings well known without it, my daughters will vouch for that !!

supernana Fri 06-May-11 13:56:38

I thank you all for your personal responses...we each have an opinion and that's what we're hoping to share from here-on. I have used terrible language (in private - in the heat of the moment - whenever I'm pushed beyond the limit of whatever it is that gets me sounding-off)...all that I'm saying is, there is a time and place for expletives and I think that it is okay to say so. I hope that you have a good day in your own sweet way.

twinklepickers Fri 06-May-11 14:34:45

I don't mind bad language - it's inappropriate use of bad language that annoys me. And rudeness and impoliteness is far worse IMHO. If someone drops something on their foot and utters an expletive, fair enough. If they don't say thank you when I've done them a favour that's worse in my book.

Divawithattitude Fri 06-May-11 15:15:14

As a Grandma who has frequented Mumsnet for a number of years I think you ladies may well be living in another time and place with regard to bad language.

Each to their own is my opinion, and if there are posters who swear then don't read their posts if they are likely to inflame your delicate sensitivities, I do not think you are being reasonable to start this site by deciding on behalf of all who may use it in the future that because you personally find bad language offensive we should all do so!

Now please and thank you and good manners, that is another matter entirely.................

supernana Fri 06-May-11 16:55:29

Thank you for your honest and forthright comment Divawithattitude...I am not foolish enough to presume that every person using this site will agree with my opinion. As far as I'm concerned, please continue to use language appropriate to you...as you suggest, I can always skip to the next posting...best wishes.

grandmaagain Fri 06-May-11 16:58:28

if disliking swearing is an attitude from the past we are all doomed! shockit is nothing about delicate sensitivities and all about self control and self respect. There are thousands of words in the english language to show disgust, displeasure, anger etc WITHOUT resorting to being offensive. Surely over use of swear words reduces there effectiveness anyway. There may be a time and place for swearing for some people but it is not here.

grandmacwtch Fri 06-May-11 17:13:00

The thing I find most annoying is mobile phones, they are very handy, but most people seem to be using them 22 hours a day. Friends using them when you are eating out together, me sitting there silently whilst they chat away for ten minutes - how very rude. Swearing is ok, but when it is every other word it really gets my goat.

I work with people in their twenties who laugh at me when I say things like "why won't this fluffing thing work". I think the worst thing I say is bloody or bum.

usualsuspect Fri 06-May-11 17:22:22

I don't see how you can dictate how others post on here

oooh we can drink here as well wine

BecauseImWorthIt Fri 06-May-11 17:22:24

Why should it not be here, grandmaagain? Just because you don't like it?!
