AIBU to expect a librarian to know how to spell midwife? I know some people struggle with words and I am the first to admit I struggle with numbers, but this woman left me speechless (and that is difficult). I had forgotten the name of the author of the Midwife's Confession and asked her if she could look it up as I wanted to see if they had any other books by the author. First of all she couldn't spell midwife and then told me in a very snooty way that the plural of midwife's is midwives - told her I know that but this was a confession made by the midwife so it is an apostrophe s. Anyway she couldn't find anything so I ended up coming home intending to look on the internet - of course I'd remembered it before I got home!

Ridiculous woman – not you janreb, the illiterate and unqualified librarian.

janreb Thu 25-Aug-11 14:12:58

Oh I've been called worse than ridiculous woman absentgrana!!!!!

yogagran Thu 25-Aug-11 21:51:03

It's a brilliant book - you'll really enjoy it That's if the library can eventually find it for you.....

greenmossgiel Thu 25-Aug-11 21:55:04

What is the book about? I might request it at my library.

Libradi Thu 25-Aug-11 22:15:44

janreb, Diane Chamberlain's 'The Lost Daughter' is really good.

glammanana Thu 25-Aug-11 22:23:53

janreb can I ask please who wrote The Midwife's Confession

yogagran Thu 25-Aug-11 22:24:11

greenmossgiel - with apologies to Amazon (copied from their website). The Midwife's Confession by Diane Chamberlain:

I don’t know how to tell you what I did. Would you read a letter never meant to be opened? Would you want to know secrets never meant to be told? Or should a woman's mistakes stay buried? An unfinished letter was hidden amongst Tara and Emerson’s best friend’s things after her suicide. Noelle was the woman they entrusted to deliver their precious babies into the world, a beloved friend. Her suicide shocked them both. But her legacy could destroy them. For her letter reveals a terrible secret that challenges everything they thought they knew. Taking them on a journey that will irrevocably change their own lives – and the life of a desperate stranger – forever.

If you've read and enjoyed any of Jodi Picoult's books you'll love these even more

greenmossgiel Thu 25-Aug-11 22:27:49

Thank you yogagran. I'll look for it next time I'm at the library. (I'll have to write it down, or I'll forget!) smile

glammanana Thu 25-Aug-11 22:28:18

Thank's for the post yogagran I know it was not for my attention but I am in need of some good book's to read and am off to the library to-morrow.

yogagran Thu 25-Aug-11 22:34:36

I forget everything these days greenmossgiel, sometimes I've gone a long way into a book for it to suddenly dawn on me that I've read it before! Recently discovered a website that I find very useful. Keeps track of books I have read and I can give them star ratings too

www.goodreads.com/

I keep an alphabetical record of all the books I read, because my memory is so dreadful, also giving a score out of 10. It is invaluable when choosing library books.
I have made a note of the above-mentioned titles for the future.
One of the best things about retirement is that I have time to read now, although I still feel guilty if I do so during the day (in the bath seems O.K.)!

glassortwo Fri 26-Aug-11 09:20:40

janreb make sure you get a copy of Midwife's Confession, I received a free copy from GN and I have read about 3/4 and I am thoroughly enjoying it.

Jacey Fri 26-Aug-11 09:42:49

Yes shysal ...I have time to read now, as well ...and don't feel guilty!!

I down load the titles of books written by my favourite authors ...then order them in the library ...so get to read them in the correct order ...then mark them off, as I get to read them ...so no longer get a book out twice!! confused
Often these sites give links to other authors who write similar genres ...which can be very useful

My library is really good at ordering books for me, as they are linked to other libraries in the area ...all at no charge smile

janreb Fri 26-Aug-11 11:27:04

I read The Midwife's Confession and really enjoyed it so I wanted to try more of her (Diane Chamberlain) books. Think I will order from Amazon. Libradi - I will try the Lost Daughter and also fancy the Shadow Wife

absentgrana Fri 26-Aug-11 11:46:02

Clearly gransnetters are better informed about books than janreb's inept librarian.

Libradi Fri 26-Aug-11 13:24:22

I loved the Lost Daughter janreb, not read the Shadow Wife yet.

yogagran Fri 26-Aug-11 13:45:24

I liked the Lost Daughter too. Diane Chamberlain is a recent discovery for me and I'm gradually working my way through her books. Only problem is that now I've discovered GN I get distracted in the evenings so don't have as much time for reading as I used to!

nanapug Fri 26-Aug-11 13:47:14

Thank you every one, have just asked my DD to stop off at the library to try to get me one of these books. Love recommendations....

Joan Fri 26-Aug-11 14:27:40

Just a thing about libraries - the person you deal with is not usually a librarian, but a library technician - a sort of clerk. Librarians have a university degree - usually two because library qualifications are often post graduate.

(I used to work for a supplier of serials, ie magazines and journals, to libraries)

greenmossgiel Fri 26-Aug-11 14:38:13

Just requested The Midwife's Confession online from my library. yogagran, I know what you mean - I should be knitting hats for seafarers at this precise moment. Instead I'm browsing away my afternoon on gransnet....have just washed the floors though...so I feel entitled to a quick glimpse.....grin

glammanana Fri 26-Aug-11 18:00:29

My library didn't have the two book's that I wanted so i got out "The bay at Midnight" and "The lie's She Told" both look to be a good read,I did not realise that Diane Chamberlain had written so many book's certainly plenty to keep me going for a while

Jacey Fri 26-Aug-11 18:17:24

Thanx Joan ...that might explain why, when I tried to order the 1st Jo Nesbo book, I was told " we have none of her books" confused. I was good ...I made no comment. But, I tried again next time I was in ...I am now about to begin his 1st book smile

yogagran Fri 26-Aug-11 19:57:48

Be interesting to know what you think of those glammanana as I haven't read either of them

glammanana Fri 26-Aug-11 23:04:14
