To catch sight of myself in a shop window and think, "Oh no! I thought I looked better than that....!

I always seem to look better (well, a bit anyway) in my wardrobe mirror before I leave the house, then when I catch sight of myself in a shop window, I have become this 'a bit overweight, late middle-aged' woman! Sometimes confidence plays a part I suppose, but today I really didn't like the look of myself! hmm

I'm the same, a shop window gives me extra chins and a much bigger belly. Don't pay any attention to it greenmossgiel, the glass in these shops have a distorting effect, plus there are objects that add to that effect, at least that's my story and I'm sticking to it! grin

Wrong sort of glass – stick to wardrobe mirrors and wine.

I thought that to yesterday when out with DD in Liverpool,we where sat in a pub enjoying the music and I just happened to glance at the mirror behind us and thought Who is That ? needless to say it was Moi ! so I think a complete make over is in order,I've lost weight over the past month's but I think maybe a new hair style is due and a complete overhall in the dress department.

Oh I never thought that maybe I had drunk to many vino's !!!

I usually think "how did my mum get there" because, of course, I look nothing like her! Another thing, how do I look 20 years younger at the hairdresser's even before I've had my hair done?

photographs are the worst - they seem to shoe up extra lines and double chins. So its better to be the one taking the photos.
Shop windows and alien mirrors are best avoided

Some clever shops angle their mirrors to make unsuspecting customers look longer and leaner, they do something with the lighting too making one look as if in soft focus. Nice while it lasts!

There's definitely something in shop window glass that makes you look older and grimmer! (And just like your mother). Perhaps they do it to make you want to go in a buy new clothes for improvement!

Hattie64 Mon 29-Aug-11 19:39:26

If you ignore all windows and mirrors, you will always be a young 34.Trim figure, no wrinkles, no grey hair, fabulous and young. Also don't let anybody take your photo, because the woman looking into the lens is becoming a old woman.
I think there is something inaccurate with shop mirrors as well. The times you try on a garment and think you look fab, but when you put it on at home, it does absolutely nothing for you.

I concur with you Hattie - I seem to be morphing into my mother and try ever so hard to avoid the colours she wore. At least we can avoid those awful man made fibres that were so big in their generation.

It's the side view as you glance in a window as you are walking by ...in light weight summer clothes ...where did that curved back come from!!

You know that warped mirror thingy at the fun fairs ...often think fitting room mirrors are slightly curved to flatter one confused ...oh and the soft lighting they use!

A bit like supermarkets wafting the smell of freshly baked bread through the air!!

yogagran Mon 29-Aug-11 21:41:34

It's the bathroom mirror first thing in the morning - I look so like my mother then!

Jangran Tue 30-Aug-11 14:42:09

I find the very worst are the mirrors in fitting rooms - especially when they are arranged so as to reflect you from all angles.

For one thing you are usually foreshortened, because you are so close to the mirror, but often the lighting makes you look greenish and ancient.

I have to try to imagine myself in a distance mirror, with softer lighting to persuade myself to buy anything!

When I catch sight of myself I always looks so sad and tired. I have always thought no amount of plastic surgery would wipe the pissed off expression of my face.sad

elderflower1 Tue 30-Aug-11 20:28:29

susiecb grin I know the feeling

bigmomma Tue 30-Aug-11 20:37:06

Oh no! You've all got it wrong! The very, very worst thing is when you go to the opticians for a new pair of glasses and they take your photo so that you can see, without your own glasses, if the frames will suit you. To see your poor familiar face in close up AND enlarged is an experience I refuse to repeat.

rhoda590 Sat 10-Sep-11 22:56:43

I always look sad and tired, i dont know why, also i look just like my mum which makes me miss her more and more. xxx

greenmossgiel Sun 11-Sep-11 09:28:13

rhoda590, I see my mother when I see me in a mirror, as well - so how is it that I thought of her as an attractive woman, but am super-critical of my own ageing appearance?!! hmm
