To ask for discount

My S.O. [the ex rep] once went to Debenhams to buy some bedding. Asked how much discount he could have if he bought two of everything...was told about 20% [I may be wrong about the exact amount], then only bought one of everything but still got the discount [must point out he didn't do it deliberately, it was only after we left he realised he'd changed his mind at the last minute about what to buy]. We assume it's only in certain situations we can haggle [a Turkish market for instance] but you can do it anywhere [well, not on a bus or anything]. If the answer is 'no' then he smiles and says 'worth a try'. The mark up price on most things is pretty high and a sale is a sale. Good for you, glammanana!

Well done glammamana. My aunt always used to say "Those who don't ask, don't get". Lots of places add on all sorts of service charges that they are quite prepared to reduce or remove completely if challenged. Well done to your daughter for saving up rather than using a credit card and now you've helped her save a bit more. I'm sure the carpet supplier is not going to go into administration over £76.00 – but I bet your daughter can make good use of it. And anyway, your comment was perfectly reasonable – hardly making a fuss.

absentgranaDH would never ask for a discount for anything he will alway's pay full price,DD and I use coupon's from groupon for posh meal's out and he will never come with us we go to some fab place's so more fool him for missing out.DD is putting £76.00 to book family holiday next year for her and 4DGCs.

It seems to be worth mentioning that you can get the same item cheaper on the internet or elsewhere. Many shop managers will match it but you do have to ask for the manager. If you start to walk away they often come and get you.

I once asked for a discount on a watch I was buying for DH they gave me 12% off £1200, I asked because I was paying cash.

I always ask for discount for things that are 'substantially priced'. DH walks away, mortified, but is then very pleased with me when I 'strike a deal'! I once managed to get a money off a vacuum cleaner when I bought a new washing machine!

In the north east we say 'a shy bairn gets nowt'

My DH will ask for discount anywhere and I am quite embarrassing at times, but 9 times out of 10 he will be given a discount.

My friend and her partner both aged 18 went into a jewellers for her engagement ring asked to look at a tray with diamond solitaires the assistant said 'oh dear I think they will be out of your price range' so he asked again for the tray and insisted on my friend having a ring from that tray just to show her! He was skint for a long time took all his savings but he said it was worth it just to see the assistants face. Sorry went off on a tangent

On a similar tangent to glassortwo. My son went in to buy a laptop. In dirty overalls and smelling of cows he looked at one of the more expensive ones and asked "how much off for cash". The snooty assistant looked down his nose and offered a cheaper version and easy payments. Son still insisted on the more expensive and a discount. After pulling his wallet full of twenty pound notes he got his discount. "Can't judge a book by its cover"

I always ask for discounts...much to hubbies and DDs embarrassments...but its always nice to see the grins on their faces when I succeed in my haggling. Just like absent says if you dont ask-you dont get
