Have posted here instead of food topic as it's going to be ready in about 30/40 mins and I cannot decide? and if your having fish for tea then maybe do not read any further! )will leave a space so need to scroll down.

DH has not been eating well adn he kept tellingme about this "fish pie" that the man on the tv adverst makes!
Sooooo me being a good wife went and bought fish this morn (cost me £7 shock as I thought I would make him a nice home made fish pie topped with mashed pots and cheese etc.
so I cooked the fish in milk n water seasoned it etc then got my slotted spoon and took out the fish to put in dish (left the milk n water in the pan to make a sauce) so far so good.
so Im swirling the milk/water round before adding the cornflour and though hmmm [hmm}?? whats that long thing floating around..( about a good 2 inch long thin and whiet coloured)! I fishes it out (pardon the pun) and I thought ohhhhhh myyyy its worm!!! a long white worm!!! I put it to one side whilst i got my magnifyer!1 and yes it is a worm "dead of course" im not sure if it is a full worm it looks liek a may ahve choped some off!!!shock
Now I am not a great fish eater...but have just started becoming one as its easy for DH to eat and digest....now then...the question is.
"Would you still eat it"?? "Could you still eat it"?? if I suddnely don't have any then DH would woder why and he prob would not have any (I havnt said anything to him and if I told him I know he couldnt eat it)!!
it has cost me prob about £10 by time I bought pots/etc to go with it....
??? anyone?
A

So, do you think the worm came from the fish? Where did you buy it? Supermarket or fishmonger?

ninathenana Sat 11-Feb-12 16:43:32

eewwww ! no don't think I could.

Annobel Sat 11-Feb-12 16:45:19

I think I would keep the evidence and confront the shop that sold you the fish. No, wild horses wouldn't persuade me to eat it! shock

whatisamashedupphrase Sat 11-Feb-12 16:45:25

Was it like this?

I wouldn't eat it. Seal fish and worm in poly bag, put in fridge and take it back on Monday.

Says here not harmful if the fish is cooked thoroughly.

seafood.ucdavis.edu/pubs/parasite.htm

Don't think I could eat it though.

What a shame!

greenmossgiel Sat 11-Feb-12 16:50:01

Horrible - no you mustn't eat it! YUK!!! Take it back to the shop.

whatisamashedupphrase Sat 11-Feb-12 16:52:29

Well, that article says it only like getting an insect in an apple! Says it's not contamination.

Ask your DH what he reckons Biker. It's not going to do him any harm but perhaps it's better to tell him first.

What`s worse, finding a worm, or finding half a worm? No, I couldn`t eat it, but then I`m squeamish anyway. I`d do what`s been suggested, wrap it up and take it back to the shop. When I was a youngster, I used to spend my summer holidays at my grandma`s in Lancashire, she used to come over on the bus to fetch me. Once she stayed overnight, and in the morning she brought out some bacon that she`d brought for all our breakfasts. As she unwrapped it, my mother recoiled in horror, it was crawling with maggots!! My mother was going to bin it, but my grandma was aghast at the idea, so she cooked it and ate it herself!

It was a sliced loaf

bikergran Sat 11-Feb-12 17:23:09

Seventimesfive Sat 11-Feb-12 17:54:51

Yuk bikergran what a shame! I love fish but not with a side helping of worm! If you can fish (sorry) it out of the bin I would take it back to A... Have found their fish counter good in the past but will look very carefully from now on. Enjoy the beans on toast!

bikergran Sat 11-Feb-12 19:13:45

To be honest if I had cooked the fish all in a one piece..I am sure I would not have notice the offending thing! as it blended in ...it ws an off whitish pale brown colour......I have no chance of "fishing" lol it out...........Im sure it could not have been seen whilst filetingt eh fish........and don;t blam A*da...I shall be leaving fish alone for a while...but we were going to visit and have lunch/tea at a a fish n chip restruant in near Clevelys ..that won best fish n chip shop..!! hmmmmmm.....

This is one of my dreads. I am a veggie except for the occasional bit of white fish. However, a few months ago I read an article about how common worms in fish is. I went right off fish until a few weeks ago. Now, I'm definitely off fish again, this time probably for good.

gracesmum Sat 11-Feb-12 19:43:57

I had skate tonight cooked in a bag with fennel butter form Waitsore - I don't think I'd have seen it if there had been one. Shame you binned it - I'd have taken it back and expected a VERY large voucher along with an abject apology.

yogagran Sat 11-Feb-12 21:18:59

I'm sorry Oxon but that really made me laugh!

I don't think I would have eaten the fish but I do wonder just how many "things" we do eat inadvertently

Grannylin Sat 11-Feb-12 21:38:52

Lots of fresh fish have worms in, especially cod, haddock etc. Its the red ones inside the scaley bits on the outside of fresh mussels that I don't like!

Cod is well known to have worms in it, some people never eat cod because of it. I have heard that the worms can be quite big !!!!
I found a wasp in a tin of fruit once, also stones in a tin of Baxters soup.
When I complained to Baxters about it they sent me some vouchers (for more soup!!!!) and a letter saying how sorry they were to hear about the stones in the soup , they went on to explain that great care is taken in the production of their soups and only natural ingredients go into their soups.

Well stones are natural aren't they hmm

In the same week in the early 90's I found a maggot embedded in a weetabix and a huge moth in a bar of Galaxy chocolate.
