to buy maternity wear in shops?

I don't much like the current trend for stretching tops and leggings over the bump. Not that I ever tried to conceal it but it seems more comfortable to wear something loose. Am I old-fashioned? probably. Do I care? No.

Obviously not the season to be pregnant!

I remember when my nan died, trying to buy a dark dress for the funeral!
I was told " sorry modom! It's not the season for mourning" ?

Though it won't work for immediate need of an outfit but my DDs always ordered on line for maternity ..various sizes of same items... as they found sizing even more bizarre for maternity wear! Easier to try on in comfort of own home.

I know when DD was pregnant it was very hard to find maternity wear in the local stores - we had to go to Chester to find the Dorothy Perkins maternity range, and even then it was just jeans and tops. I would have thought it would have improved these days, but obviously not! I suppose girls these days just wear their ordinary clothes - most of them are stretchy enough. (The clothes, not the girls!)

I like the 'stretchy' fashionable look of pregnant women. I remember seeing one young woman with leggings, long tight t-shirt and a brilliant orange scarf tied in an interesting way around her bump. She looked stunning. Much prefer that to the smocks I wore.

My youngest daughter wore her size 10 jeans with a longer top up to the 7th month then to her horror had to buy a pair of size 12 jeans. I suppose modern fashions help.

I suppose what really annoys me is that some young women insist on wearing a short - even a crop - top which then rides up over the bump.

My DD bought 3 pairs of maternity jeans and some other tops from Ebay. Very good value given that anything "maternity" is more expensive than ordinary stuff. She didnt have to get "decent" clothes for work though as she is a nurse and just borrowed bigger uniform.

MY DiL just bought maternity jeans from M & S and then wore her ordinary clothes. I think that is the trend.

I bought a lovely floaty top from Matalan a few weeks ago, only to discover when I got home that it was from the maternity range. Their plus size and mums-to-be sections are next to each other, and I suppose could be interchangeable! I still like the top and have cut out the label in case it should stick out and be seen!

Thanks everyone for your ideas! There is some hope, it seems and I'll pass them on to DD and explore the internet for our nearest stores. It does seem strange though that maternity wear is generally on line these days.

Perhaps they had all sold out. According to the lunch time news Britian is in the middle of a baby boom, the highest birth figures since 1972, with more families having three children.

Most of my daughter's maternity clothes were bought on ebay. Most of them were only worn for two of three months so it hardly seemed worth buying new.

I remember making a lot of my maternity clothes - some of them were then recycled into clothes for my daughter. I did have a wonderful maternity dress from Biba, but it hardly got worn as I never went anywhere smart enough to wear it.

I bought a black corduroy pinafore that I lived in, but most of my clothes had been given to me by a neighbour who wasn't going to have any more children. We just used to pass things round the village in those days. I can't imagine being pregnant now [seriously I CAN'T imagine being pregnant now] and having to look like I'd stepped out of a fashion magazine. That 3 girl group were the ones that made it cool to be pregnant [one of them married Liam Gallagher].

When I had my children we lived in a new house on a new estate at a time when people married, bought house then had children (statement of fact, not value judgement). Babies arrived so regularly in our close we used to refer to the 'Baby of the Month Club'

We also, quite accidentally and informally ended up with a common wardrobe of maternity clothes because everybody would pass things on or lend clothes. My first pregnancy was in the summer and I bought a selection of summer maternity clothes. Once DS appeared and, no longer working, I got to know my neighbours. I lent my clothes to the later summer pregnant. I had a winter pregnancy second time around and didn't buy a single item of maternity wear, it was all borrowed or given.
