....to make a fuss?

It's not like me to have a sense of humour by-pass but it happened this afternoon.

Lovely trip to the local garden centre ....bought a few veg seeds and a rustic owl Christmas decoration. So far, so good. Continued browsing in their book section and found a book specifically for older people, with quizzes and teasers to 'stimulate the mind' and a blurb to say how important this is as you age. Well it certainly stimulated me, because the book was called Puzzles for Wrinklies and I objected most strongly to the first shop assistant I could find!

How very dare they!

Typing it is making me smile though grin

Notsogrand.........am glad you are smiling a bit now. I dont think you are being daft tho. One half of society/media is bombarding us with images of how to keep young......botox, overpriced cosmetics etc etc and on the otherhand there are blatantly ageist things about. Its not surprising we dont know which way to turn.

I have wrinkles but I dont want to be known as a 'Wrinkly'. I have grey hair but I dont want to known as a 'silver surfer'. I have the odd false tooth, I could go on but its too depressing. I also laugh out loud at 'The Bang Theory' wear jeans most days, get my toenails painted startling colours and enjoy flirting outrageously with OH. Thats the trouble with silly thoughtless stereotypes...they take away the individual and thats unforgivable!

Good work Notso....but speaking as an ex-shop assistant I hope you were suitably jocular with said shop assistant, as it was hardly his/her fault! smile

I began my complaint by saying I realised it wasn't her responsibility Hilda, but just to register that I thought the title was offensive. She actually agreed with me and we had a bit of a chunter together about it.

Did you then share a nice brew and cupcake smile

Notsogrand Sat 20-Oct-12 16:34:45

We didn't soop, but they do have a lovely restaurant there with the scrummiest of cupcake Their date slices are real show-stoppers! smile

It's a very dismissive term, that's for sure.

Hope you didn"t buy it !!!!!!!!what a horrid expression

I can't help wondering whatever made the publisher choose such a title. If the company was aiming at the older market – which it seems it was – whatever made it think that that older market would like to be associated with such an unappealing description. Well I don't think that company is going to last long. Good thing too.

The title was probably thought up by a 20 something who thought it would be amusing Wonder what they would feel like if someone published a book called Puzzles for the Infantile!

[whisper] Has anyone ever used one of those Books for Dummies? Computing for
Dummies and similar titles. I think the 'wrinklies' is meant humorously. At least, it wouldn't bother me. I am certainly wrinklier than I used to be and will no doubt become more so.

Anyway, brains are very wrinkly. No-one minds being called brainy.

Didn't a similar thing happen on one of those Apprentice television programmes? I don't watch them but I seem to recall there was a team of bright young things who planned a magazine for wrinklies that was widely discussed on Gransnet at the time. I can't remember the title they chose but I think it was something equally absurd. However, I do remember one of their planned articles was about how to use a mobile phone. hmm

I've got 'Crochet for Dummies' - having trouble managing to get the hang of it. (creeps into convenient hole)

JessM Tue 23-Oct-12 15:44:23

Anno are you making any progress on the crochet. I bought a book called The Happy Hooker, that was quite helpful. Then i bought some more books, aspiring at the time to crochet flowers, butterflies and bees. But got in a bit of a mess because Uk crochet instructions so different to american ones. So my progress has stalled.

I got a kid's set from Amazon, but haven't got very far yet. I rather lost interest, but my GD says she can teach me. blush
