well, I try not to be pedantic about spelling/grammar even though it grates a bit - but after all it not going to stop the world turning!

However, I work in tourism and of course we get many lovely posters and promotional bits to advertise "What's On" locally. But so many come to us with appalling mistakes, eg
"Teds Taxi's!"
"Our center is free of charge"
"Treatments at our spa are entirely non-evasive"

Anyway, I felt I must make a stand when a rep from a local attraction came in today with glossy, colourful posters for a Hallowe'en food event. It was a gorgeous poster. Unfortunately the wording read ... "Mum's! Dad's! Kid's get FREE ice cream Sundae's!"

I mentioned the mistakes to the rep. "What mistakes?", he asked. I pointed them out more carefully, he just didn't see it!!

Well anyway I refused to accept them on the grounds that it is a family event and any children (or adults for that matter) might copy those mistakes.

Will I be banished to the Tourist Information Centre in Hell? wink

Good for you, beachee!! It may not do any good, but you've stuck to your principles (had to check that with Mr when because of sudden mental block!) and someone, somewhere may benefit. You're right though, that someone might have thought that the wrong version was right if it had appeared in print and so you've struck a blow for good English. I think that the person who could end up in the Tourist Information Centre in Hell is the one who wrote the poster in the first place, and you may have started his/her rehabilitation by refusing it in the first place. Well done! flowers

Ha ha! He blamed it on the printer but even so, don't they proof-read first?

absentgrana Thu 25-Oct-12 19:30:48

Beachee Proof-read – what? Did you know that there was a time when if an Oxford University Press book went to print and then a mistake was discovered, the person responsible (editor/proof-reader) was fined? Autres temps, autres moeurs. smile

Wheniwasyourage Thu 25-Oct-12 19:34:38

Who is to say that the proof-reader would know about apostrophes anyway?

absentgrana Thu 25-Oct-12 19:47:54

wheniwasyourage If the proof-reader does not know about apostrophes, the proof-reader should find alternative employment. [sniffy professional emoticon]

Beachee Thu 25-Oct-12 20:03:35

Printers and proof-readers just rely on spell-checks. This is the problem

Beachee Thu 25-Oct-12 20:07:47

there is a whole chain of holiday parks (I shall not name) in the South West with menus advertising "Pizza's" and "Ice Cream's" on everysingle one of their tables

vampirequeen Thu 25-Oct-12 20:11:40

Apostrophes are nightmares.

Beachee Thu 25-Oct-12 20:14:13

absentgrana this is so true

Beachee I am going to be totally pedantic and point out that there is a whole section of this forum called "PEDANTS CORNER" which is different to the AIBU section. Just for future reference like. And just so non pedants can steer clear of pedant threads. Grand Mumsnet and Gn tradition. You have now been warned grin

This is a well known condition: over aposthophisation..there is treatment I believe smile

We have worried the younger generation so much, they're nervous and make mistakes...be gentle.

JessM. I'll get my coat smile

I'm always surprised by the number of large organisations which send out notices which will be seen all over the country and contain glaring spelling or punctuation errors. You can understand the occasional slip in a hastily written notice in a corner shop, but surely a national company should have someone among their management graduates who would notice mistakes?

According to Daily Express columnist Beachcomber, in Elizabethan England a greengrocer happened to notice a misplaced apostrophe in a royal decree. When he pointed it out , QueenElizabeth 1st immediately created the office of Apostropher Royal, to control the quality and distribution of apostrophes and deliver them in wheelbarrows to all the greengrocers of England on the second Thursday of every month(Apostrophe Thursday) I found this so amusing that whenever I see an incorrect use of an apostrophe ,instead of getting cross I just have a little smile.

I saw a poster recently inviting people to take part in a reduced price sugar craft coarse.
