I heard John Humphreys (Mastermind) interviewing Jeremy Paxman (University Challenge) on Today. Paxman said he was staggered by the extent of knowledge of some of the contestants, but the type of knowledge had changed. One team could not identify three very well-known (I thought!) hymns, including The Lord's My Shepherd, but they had wide knowledge on science, astronomy, technology, art, and classical music.
I, too, often wonder why some teams enter Eggheads when they lack even rudimentary knowledge of anything other than pop music/TV/films/sport.
I do wonder about the value of learning long lists off by heart, which is apparently what the professional quizzers do - I suppose it earns them a good living, but surely there must be more creative ways of spending your time? (Does anybody like CJ? Or Chris? I do like Kevin, Barry and Pat, and Judith, although she has no more general knowledge than any reasonably educated person).
