Tailors are now not allowed to measure the "inside leg"!

We went to gents outfitters on Saturday morning for DDs partner to be measured for suit etc.. at the end of the fitting one of the men mentioned that the tailor hadn't taken inside leg measurement! Tailor replied "we are not allowed to any more" something to do with gay rights etc and that 2 tailors, one on London, not sure about the other had been prosecuted for "inopropiate touching"!.... they now only measure the out leg from the waist down.

How ridiculous! That's like going for a bra fitting and measuring your waist! grin

OMG - how utterly stupid - so now we'll have a lot of ill fitted suits.

They could give the tape measure to the customer to hold in their own crotch, couldn't they, while they deal with the bit at the ankle?

Besides, how silly to call it "inappropriate" touching when, clearly, it is appropriate for measuring an inside leg!

Sigh.

I wonder if this is a universal ruling for all tailors or just one particular soppy company? I can't imagine that any man would be prepared to pay, say, Saville Row prices for ill-fitting trousers as a result of not being properly measured.

Pathetic.

Smoluski Mon 19-Nov-12 10:28:34

ella have to take my bra measurement round my knees..grin

Ana Mon 19-Nov-12 10:52:24

What on earth have gay rights got to do with it anyway? confused
Can't get my head round that...

gracesmum Mon 19-Nov-12 11:00:06

And I suppose they will no longer be able to enquire "which side Sir dresses" in case that is interpreted as "which side Sir bats for"!!!shock

Ana Mon 19-Nov-12 12:20:54

I've searched online for this new ruling, and can find no trace of it (other than biker's post!).

Many years ago I worked in a men's department of a large clothes store and when measuring men's inside leg you just handed one end of the tape measure to the customer to hold at the crutch area and I recorded the length holding the other end of the tape.. we always did it that way even my male colleagues.. sounds like stuff and nonsense to me..

feetlebaum Mon 19-Nov-12 12:31:03

Ooh! Suit you, Sir...

petallus Mon 19-Nov-12 12:52:51

Oh no, getting my inside leg measured is one of the few thrills left to me nowadays.

Another one is being frisked at the airport.

I wonder if that will be stopped as well.

HildaW Mon 19-Nov-12 13:28:57

Bags.......thats what we did at the posh Ladies and genlteman's retailer I used to work for, naming no names!

HildaW Mon 19-Nov-12 13:30:33

petallus......you should travel with me, that lot in the US always give me a good seeing to as I always ring the alarms bells.

Mishap Mon 19-Nov-12 13:43:42

Now....who would we LIKE to measure our inside leg? I can think of one or two!!

jeni Mon 19-Nov-12 14:09:59

The chap who played judge John Deed. I can never remember the names of actors.

bikergran Mon 19-Nov-12 14:27:00

Ana yep that is what we were told on Saturday..his words were."we are not allowed to measure the inside leg now" not sure if just that perticular tailors , I didn't ask...he just said that 2 Tailors were prosicuted for doing such thing... so I don't know if it's common practice (I don't mean inoproppiate touching, I mean measuring) ..so DD didn't argue smile we are in Lancashire so I don't know if it extends further but he did mention London.

jeni you mean the lovely Martin Shaw smile

Ana Mon 19-Nov-12 15:13:04

I did discover from my Google search that a tailor had been prosecuted for inappropriate behaviour when measuring a ^woman's* inside leg.....confused

FlicketyB Mon 19-Nov-12 17:34:59

It probably wasnt the measuring that cause the problem but the other activity he fitted in at the same time. Its like not getting undressed for a medical examination because some doctors have been prosecuted for inapropriate behaviour.

I'm always hopeful for a good frisking at an airport because I always set the alarms off. Sadly they always bring out a female officer who looks like Mike Tyson when I was thinking more George Clooney.

Thanks all. Had a good laugh. Better because not expected.
