To feel cross with OH

Mine get so greasy I think it would take a blow torch to clean them . Which would, perhaps not be a god idea.

I can't see the tops of my kitchen cupboards - nuff said!!

Who ever thought that it was a good idea to have tops - if they went up to the ceiling they wouldnt have them.

IT must be so frustrating for him too mishap we have friend with pd but to be honest he had it over 10 years he does not do much leaves it all to wife but he did anyway!

Actually I probably know. It's always when you are feeling low in yourself that the house seems grubbier and the housework starts screaming at you.

When we redid our kitchen 5 years ago the best advice I got was to have the wall units go right up to the ceiling!
Mishap you are totally reasonable - You have enought to cope with without further looking after a DH with cracked ribs. But he, like most men people, will never be told. All I can say is have another , sigh and give him a strictly limited amount of sympathy. Mine for you is unlimited !!!

grace I had the top of my kitchen units built in, after my two DC (about 14 and 8 yrs old)took the chair away when I was up cleaning the tops knowing I am terrified of heights, it had taken me weeks of building myself up to climb up and wash the tops..... they still laugh about the state of me clinging to the cupboards but it was the best thing I had ever done.

It might just be an illusion. Like my ability to type correctly today.

Surely, whatever our age we need to think and be sensible about what we do. DD wants to decorate her hall, landing and stairs. This will mean ladders going over the stairs and reaching out to get paint onto stair walls over 10 foot high. As she lives alone she has asked me to come and stay when she does it. I will help her with decorating but the main reason for my presence will be for Health and Safety reasons. She is hiring a scaffold platform but needs help erecting it and needs someone around should help be needed.

Last week our kitchen ceiling was replaced and I was standing on worktops cleaning the tops of cupboards. I used a step stool to get to the work top and as I fortunately do not have any physical limitations, or dizziness I was as safe doing it as I was 30 years ago. It is not age but fitness that decides what one does or does not do.

j08 Nothing to do with feeling low and I don't think I did feel particularly low anyway. I wash the tops of the kitchen cupboards along with the rest of them, the worktops, tiles and floor whenever I clean the kitchen. No one else was going to do it during the six weeks my leg was in plaster (strictly speaking, fibreglass), so I did.

Mishap - you are only human anyone under similar circumstances would feel the same. We all have accidents at times some more avoidable than others.

When I planned my last two kitchens the most important thing was that the cupboards went right up to the ceiling.
Cupboards that stop short of the ceiling can be protected by placing sheets of paper on the top and just removing regularly, works better with ones that have a lip on the edge otherwise you see the paper and the dust.
Why is it always women who see and remove the dust ? do men not have the ability to see it ?

I use the tops of my cupboards to store items that are not used often. They are hidden behind the cornice so cannot be seen.

DH cracked ribs a year or two back getting out of the bath. He mainly felt embarrassment as he felt having an accident getting out of the bath was a sign of decrepit old age, he was in his late 60s. DS then also cracked his ribs when he slipped on an icy pavement and DH perked up when he could share his injury with a man still in his 30s.......

Talking of snow, we are staying in our house in Normandy at the moment and the snow is coming down thick and fast. Hope it doesn't go on all day as we are meant to be eating at our favourite restaurant this evening and I do not want to cancel because we cannot get up the farm lane.

Thanks for kind supportive posts. It is good that OH wants to keep trying to do stuff - but at 7.5 stone he is not very strong and his PD makes him unbalanced - so ladders and lugging stuff about are really not on the cards. I have just aborted his efforts to change the battery in a smoke alarm which is fixed to a high pitched celiing over the stairs! He says he will do it next time I am out - hmmm. I am hoping SIL will visit soon.

Mishap get your local Fire Service to do a fire safety check! Ours were giving out leaflets at the last flu jab session, but I bet you could request one. Not only did we get a fire engine (street cred with DGC if they're around, ours werent' ) you get 2 very personable firefighters AND 2 new smoke alarms fitted with "lifetime" batteries fitted for free!! Result!

They're very pleasant as well. At least the two who fitted mine were.
I thought of locking the door and hiding the key down my front, but then I noticed they had mobile phones and could have phoned for help.

Our friend echo has Parkinson's for over 10 years does not seem to do much at all but sounds like your oh go lot spirit! Worry for you though.

Aah come on, enough with the jokes, kitchen cupboards don't really have tops do they?
